Elia Martell Week: Historical Parallels

Princess Elia Martell was married to Rhaegar Targaryen, but Rhaegar crowned Lyanna Stark as his Queen of Love & Beauty. He abandoned Elia, ran away with Lyanna to the Tower of Joy, and annulled their marriage. After her death, Elia was remembered as kind and clever, with a gentle heart and a sweet wit. 

Queen Catherine of Aragon was married to Henry VIII, but Henry became infatuated with Anne Boleyn. He broke away from the Catholic Church in order to have his marriage to Catherine annulled. and then he banished her from court. The people held Catherine in high esteem, and her death set off tremendous mourning.
