Based on the animated movie David, here are some headcanons for David's oldest brother, Eliab.

-Note: Characterizations are based on the movie not the actual Bible.

Oldest Child Syndrome

Eliab and Abinadab are close, as they are both the oldest in the family and have been together the longest. Even with teasing and getting frustrated, they still have a deeper understanding of each other. Abinadab still has the urge to knock some sense into him though, and Eliab thinks he's too soft.

Fiercely protective of his mother. He knows how hard she works to keep the household running with 9 children, and gets mad whenever they give her a hard time, intentionally or not.

Overprotective of the family in general.

Played a role in teaching David how to shepherd a flock.

Eliab has always felt older than he is. Even when he was around 10 or so, as his parents relied on him for extra help with the growing family.

Used to have a better relationship with David, but for various reasons, the relationship became more strained. (Think Isabela and Mirabel from Encanto)

Eliab has a silent rivalry with high-ranking officers in Saul's army. He wants to prove that a shepherd's son from Bethlehem can out-soldier the city-bred elites.

Eliab and Zeruiah don't have much a relationship as Eliab was already training and away a lot as a soldier during her formative years and it secretly makes him a little sad.

Psychology Headcanon:

Deep down, Eliab somewhat understands why David was chosen over him. He is more aware that he is prone to pride, jealousy, and lack of empathy than he likes to acknowledge. One of the reasons Eliab started giving David a hard time because he reminds him of the things he doesn't like about himself. He wants to be a good brother and an honorable warrior and find favor from God, but he can never act on it, and he doesn't understand why. He represents the verse Romans 7:15, " I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not, but what I hate I do."

EL RECHAZO DEBE CAER 

David solo era un adolescente cuando llegó a la batalla entre los israelitas y los filisteos. No era miembro del ejército, sino que solo les estaba llevando víveres a sus hermanos. Cuando llegó al campamento, oyó las burlas de Goliat… y preguntó quién iría a echarlo abajo. A su hermano no le gustó su inquietud. Observa lo que dice el texto: «Eliab, el hermano mayor de David, lo oyó hablar con los hombres y se puso furioso con él. Le reclamó: ―¿Qué has venido a hacer aquí?» (1 Samuel 17:28).

Esta reacción no es sorprendente si conocemos el resto de la historia. En 1 Samuel 16 se nos dice que cuando el profeta Samuel llegó a la casa de Isaí para ungir a un nuevo rey de Israel, Isaí comenzó por Eliab, el mayor de sus hijos. Eliab era el más grande, de más edad y más fuerte de los hermanos. Seguramente sería el nuevo rey. Pero Dios dijo: «No. Ese no». Sin duda alguna, Eliab se sintió despreciado. El sistema parecía estar funcionando al revés. Él no fue escogido como rey. En cambio, lo fue el hermano más joven; el muchacho que ni siquiera estaba en la fila. Eliab se sentía rechazado, y la gente rechazada rechaza a su vez a otros. 

A nadie le gusta sentir que no es lo suficientemente bueno. O listo. O deseado. Por mucho que quisiéramos que no fueran así las cosas, las opiniones de los demás son importantes. Una palabra de rechazo, incluso algo pequeño que no llevaba la intención de herirnos, se nos puede quedar en la mente y dolernos. Una pequeña semilla de rechazo puede echar raíces y causar estragos en un tiempo futuro. Después de poco tiempo, olvidamos que Dios nos creó de una manera milagrosa con un propósito y con un plan. Olvidamos que Él no nos pide que nos comparemos con los demás, ni que corramos la carrera que debe correr otro. Perdemos de vista nuestro milagroso principio y nuestra nueva creación en la persona de Cristo. Muy pronto nos hallamos atormentados por este gigante del rechazo.

La experiencia de la victoria de Jesús sobre el gigante del rechazo viene de verte a ti mismo de la forma en que tu Padre celestial te ve: como su hijo muy querido y amado. Así lo escribió Pablo: «Y, si somos hijos, somos herederos; herederos de Dios y coherederos con Cristo, pues, si ahora sufrimos con él, también tendremos parte con él en su gloria» (Romanos 8:17). Dios no te aceptó por algo que tú hubieras hecho, sino simplemente porque te amaba (lee 1 Juan 4:19). Más aún: Dios te amó tanto, que estuvo dispuesto a pagar un precio enorme para tenerte cerca de Él; la muerte de Jesús, su propio Hijo, en la cruz. 

Imagínate que Jesús te susurra hoy al oído: «Yo te amo; te amo de verdad. ¡Ya me siento complacido contigo!» Te podría parecer una locura pensar que el Dios del cielo, el Creador del universo, te conoce de una manera tan personal. Muchos de nosotros se vuelven locos cuando consiguen treinta «me gusta» en algo que han puesto en los medios sociales. ¡Sin embargo, el Dios del universo está al tanto de tu vida (lee el Salmo 8)! Es Él quien te ha buscado (lee Lucas 15:3–7). 

Incluso antes que fueras concebido, Dios quiso dejar constancia de esto y dijo: «Te escojo como mío». Esa verdad debe cultivar una sensación de aceptación en tu interior. Tu valor no está envuelto alrededor de lo que tú logres, sino que está anclado para siempre en el hecho de que Jesús fue entregado por ti. Tú fuiste hecho para ser aceptado y abrazado por tu Padre celestial. Fuiste hecho para ser amado gratuitamente. Tú vives de su aceptación, y no de la aceptación de los demás. Cuando llegues a darte cuenta de esto, el gigante del rechazo se vendrá abajo en tu vida.
