Extroverted Thinking (Te): Elliot is the first person to go in and bust down a door. He often acts before Olivia when hunting down a perp and trying to subdue them. He has a sense of duty from being in the marines and his job as an SVU detective gives him that duty as well. He’s respectful of the law and it is his duty to help uphold it though he has the tendency to abuse his power as a cop to solve cases or to serve his own needs, such as getting his daughter, Kathleen’s DUI expunged. He knows what works for him and sometimes it gets on his nerves when the captain pulls him out of an interrogation or Huang aids in an investigation.

Introverted Sensing (Si): Elliot’s whole sense of self is based on his family and his faith. When that is challenged in any sort of way, Elliot’s world is shattered. When a psychiatrist asks him if he ever considered killing himself, he quickly responds with “Suicide’s a sin.” When the subject of abortion is brought up, Elliot reacts by saying it’s wrong due to his beliefs. He’s very open about being Catholic and refers to it in jest (“Elliot, do you gamble?” “Only with birth control”) or in more serious situations. Stability is paramount in Elliot’s life, whether it’s with his family or his partnership with Olivia. He lashes out when Kathy wants a divorce. He’s wounded when Olivia needs to take a break from being his partner.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Elliot can put clues together to help find a perp but often fails to see other possibilities. If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck. He’s quick to have a prime suspect in mind for a particular crime that fits with how he sees things. However, he can adapt much to his chagrin when a case takes a turn and think on his feet as a result. Sometimes Elliot’s instincts are right, sometimes Elliot’s instincts are wrong. Elliot fails to see how his explosive behavior can have consequences and disregards the law that he’s meant to uphold.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Elliot’s emotions often come out in violent outbursts. During a case involving a father annihilating his own family, Elliot as a father himself lashes out on the perp to a point where Cragen tries to intervene but can’t. He’s very set in his ways, to the point where Fin says that he’ll always be a “rat-bastard” and that he’ll never change. It often takes the aforementioned violent outbursts for Elliot to even consider talking about his feelings - witnessing a father beat up his son causes him to lash out on the father and then confide in a psychiatrist about his own abuse by the hands of his father.

Note: Typing Elliot was a challenge. I believe that he’s an extremely damaged, extremely unhealthy ESTJ. He’s prone to lashing out very violently when someone challenges him in any way, shape, or form. He turns into a bully at times and also lashes out at authority figures who challenge him (Cragen, Tucker, etc). Though he has power, Elliot is shown abusing his power as a cop over the course of his twelve season run on SVU to accomplish a goal and justifies it at means to an end.
