Nightwing: year one

Nightwing: Year One! The Helena-Dick roleswap AU fic. This one's one that I'm hoping to work on more next year. As it is, I've got it completely outlined and a couple pages written for it:

It wasn't the first time Helena had been shot. Or even the second or the third. They were chasing the Joker when he pulled out a gun. Helena had been scaling the building behind him--a flanking maneuver--just about to climb up when he spun around and there was a sudden flash of pain. Her hand spasmed. The line, slick from the falling rain, slipped from her grasp. For a heart-stopping moment, she fell.

Expanding this to talk about the series as a whole because The King is Dead especially is in an interesting place where if I wrote the story again now it would look totally different. I knew even while writing it that there was a version of the story in which Cass actually played a role that would go really interesting places, but I was still pretty early in my Bat reading when I started plotting and writing it. The summer I spent calling my bro to rant about the story stuck in my head was the same summer I started to read No Man's Land for the first time. I had only just met Cass when I started the fic and even I was finishing The King is Dead I didn't feel anywhere near confident enough in her character to try writing her. But looking back, Cass would really solve a lot of the issues I had when writing the ending.

So, there is a AU of the Kindly Ones when Cass comes back from the confrontation with Shiva and she feels like she doesn't fit in Gotham anymore and she doesn't quite fit in Batgirl anymore. She's attacked by something strange. Something she can't articulate. Something that doesn't quite fit.

Batman goes out one night and doesn't come back.

Dick was adopted. She and Tim weren't. She wanted to be Batman one day but not yet, not like this. Tim says there needs to be a Batman so Dick ends up in the suit but he thinks they should give Jason a shot which she and Tim both think is a bad idea, but well, Batman just died.

Anyway, conflict ensues.

I got that universe all out of my system a couple years ago so I'm not going to go back to it (plus the fact that it's kind of a Sandman crossover kind of casts a shadow over the whole thing now), but the version where Cass was involved in that plot is something I think about here and there.

definitely possible :3 theyre a cute pairing, i havent interacted w much nobamaki though. i am admittedly partial to other ships with maki, but i am a multishipper at heart 🫡 nobara having a crush on maki is fun and also is it a copout to give almost every jjk ship the "compatible brand of freaks" cus every sorcerer is some kind of freak. i guess in theory they might not all be compatible 🤣
