The Hottest of the Hot by Don Kalkman Via Flickr: CSX R191, The Orange Blossom Special, was rolling past a classic B&O CPL signal at Elkridge, Maryland. The OBS was a joint Conrail/CSX/RF&P intermodal that moved produce and other things up and down the East Coast.

The power was always unpredictable but always impressive: a pair of Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac GP40-2s with a CSX U36B in the middle was the locomotion on this day.

It's all gone now.

Budd Cars East On Thomas

A four car Budd RDC train rolls east and away from the camera as the train crosses the Patapsco River over the famous Thomas Viaduct on a fine March morning in 1990. MARC's Budd cars had a little more than two years left of service before being replaced with leased equipment.

With a sigh, Rabastan waited outside the doors to the banquet hall and ruffled his hair. He checked his watch. Rodolphus was late and that set Bastan’s teeth on edge; he’d only just got back from Greece that afternoon after a summer away, and Rodolphus was late.

Bastan scrubbed a hand over his newly-tanned face, and watched as a group of fourth years wandered into the banquet. He considered simply going in and starting eating before Rodolphus arrived, simply out of spite, but decided against it.

Looking up, he saw his brother approach.

“Took your time, didn’t you?”
