The behind the scenes backbone of the now defunct Montreal Drum’n’Bass label Metaphor Recordings, Ella Grave figured building the label would eventually open doors for her to finally step up to the mic! After years of paperwork overload, Miss Grave finally sold Metaphor Recordings thus closing a very formative but frustrating venture into the land of label managing.
Dutifully building her own production studio, Ella got her first break recording back-up for feisty local female MC Dee (Atach Tatuq, Deluxxx). Through this collaboration, their partnership blossomed into the short lived all girl hip-hop collective Quat Quart where respectable shaping efforts ensued. Experiencing the stage as a beginner MC, skills had to be honed under the gun on the merciless front lines of gritty hip hop shows in and around the city! Progressively admitting that she was still very much craving big heavy drums and bass, life kinda inspired a full circle come back to heavier, darker, more moody, sexier beats, when in 2005 Ella was invited to join the Hardsteppers. Now supported by local artists featured in the Hardsteppers project (Harsteppers, Generations LP), Ella was lucky enough to work and learn alongside giants Sase One, Adam L, MC Kali and Regimental Oneton!
As the Hardsteppers band went on hiatus after Sase One’s move to the far West in September 2008, Ella connected with young local Dubstep up and comer DJ Wally and started gigging for a few years as Wally and MC Gen. Their partnership grew more and more solid and with the summer of 2009 came a big, bright, bold idea to fuse all available elements and put together a live Dubstep band, adding live drummer Pleckobwoy to the blossoming duo. Flash forward to 2012, and Risk (“Montreal’s premier live dubstep band”) has had the awesome opportunity to play in various showcases across this amazing city with the likes of Dub FX, High Tone, Construct (including being featured as JLD’s podcast #173), Vilify (at the ever ridiculously off the chain Bassdrive nights), Glitchy&Scratchy, Harmsworth, Geoff Bukk, Linvingstone, Gulf Stream, to name a few.
Over the summer in 2011, Ella was introduced to Byron via the interwebs and the 2 quickly started composing brand new original material under the name Low-ki as a parallel project which will be coming out soon as a full fledge album called Songs in the key of low (Sept. 2012).
