“When one paints an ideal, one does not need to limit one’s imagination.” - Ellen Key
In my opinion the writing style in Ellen Key texts are just as bad as her ideology. She destroys the written word, in the same manner as she destroys human beings[...]. Reading her texts, is like going to the church, and listen to the sermon of an brainless priest
Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) in a letter to her girlfriend Sophie Elkan (1853-1921). Selma is in the qoute voicing her thoughts about Ellen Key.
Ellen Key (1849-1926) were involved in the feminist debate in Sweden during the last turn of the century. but Ellen Key were also pro-eugenics and race biology. these eugenics ideas were also heavily interwoven into her political ideas. this is though all too often swept under the rug when Ellen Key in discussed in modern day Sweden.
But because of these views of Ellen Key, it is not surprising that Selma Lagerlöf, who were disabled, and her jewish girlfriend Sofie Elkan highly disliked Ellen Key. and i highly approve of their hatred of Ellen Key and her views.
this is not the only time they write letters to eachother criticing Ellen Key either! but this burn was just to epic to not share. oh Selma, you sure have a sharp pen.
untranslated qoute in original swedish:
“Jag tycker att hon [Ellen Key] är lika dålig som skribent som moralist, hon förstör språket liksom hon förstör människor. [...] att läsa henne är som att gå i kyrkan och höra en dum prest “
