Nathan got up to greet him “I knew you could do it.”
Ellis looked confused looking between his husband and son “what? How?”
“Mort and Dad said I was connected to them” he gave his dad a reassuring grin even though he was just as confused as he was. “There was something in the green slime I’ve been drinking to block out the siren’s song.” Frowning he turned to Nathan “Caleb’s in the desert. We have to hurry.”
Nodding back he had a moment of panic. What if he couldn’t put it together? What if the images remained a jumbled mess? It was one thing to have an ability and another to be expected to know how to use it. Fighting a sudden desire to scream or to hit something he walked away. He needed to think. He couldn’t take the expectant gazes of the older men so sure he’ll tell them something useful. The worst part of the whole thing was knowing the longer it took the worse things would be for Caleb. Caleb needed him and a part of him feared it might already be too late.
“I…don’t….know…” his face scrunched up in thought, twisting as he tried to make sense of the images he’d seen inside his head.
“Give the boy some space,” Nathan admonished from where he sat talking to Mortimer. “He needs time to sort the images, isn’t that right?” He gave Connor a nod “you can do it son.”
Shaking his head “not until we’ve got a plan. It won’t do to go in their half cocked. We’ll do no one any good if we walk into a trap.”
Connor wanted to argue but he knew his dad was right. Even though he didn’t know exactly what Nathan did he knew this was his area of expertise. He could only hope by the time they got there Caleb would be alright.
“You’re bleeding,” Ellis said looking over at his husband as if it were his fault.
“That’s what happens when someone has a knife on you,” Nathan explained.
Eyes snapping “this isn’t funny.”
“Didn’t say it was,” he retorted joining them “sorry.” I should have realized they’d try something like this once the siren’s song failed.”
“It’s not your fault,” Connor said, holding his shirt up to stop the bleeding “it’s more gore than anything else.”
Nodding Nathan gripped Ellis’s shoulder firmly “take the boy to the house. Clean him up. Keep the kids inside.” Turning to Mortimer “we’ve got some cleaning up to do.”

Ellis paled a little but wisely kept his mouth shut helping Connor towards the house. “The kids are scared but Caige is trying to keep them entertained.”
“Thanks Dad” Connor mumbled leaning into him. He shivered knowing what Nathan and Mortimer meant by cleaning up and felt nauseous at the idea.
