Just before the pandemic I’d finished seeing my orthopedic specialist about my knee. I was ambling along Venice Blvd in DTLA making my was to Figueroa when I stumbled across this joyously colored Mexican eatery a block east of Fig. At the time I was peckish but saw the place was packed and a waiting line of 20 minutes long at 11am. I thought to myself if this place is this busy at 11 AM. I thought at the time this place has to be amazing. So I made a mental note to return another time. It appears two years later was the time I decided to make my way back to try out El Patroncito Mexican Cuisine. It’s comfortably rustic inside. I got there after the lunch rush and had the place to myself. It closes at 6pm. Considering the area it makes sense because there are mostly professional building in the area and there’s no nightlife for blocks. I studied the menu. I desired the chicken molé but they were out. I figured the molé must be good. After another look at the menu I decided on the chicken rolled tacos and the mixed fajitas of steak, chicken and shrimp with a Mexican Coke. The waitress asked if the was anything else. I responded I think I ordered too much and we both laughed. I knew I’d be taking some leftovers home. Salsa and chips arrived. The salsa was unusual and had multiple notes of flavors that was intriguing and satisfying. The rolled tacos arrived and were delightfully presented with guacamole and cremé. They were delicious. Then a hot plate of fajitas and steam and sizzle was in the air. I had 3 salsa options. The salsas really stand out. The rojas and habaneros not because they were particularly hot but the subtle flavor profiles. The rojas was a tad smokey and the habaneros was slightly sweet and robust. The mix of grilled meats were amazing. The shrimp was TDF. I wanted more but felt it was unwise to finish so I boxed the rest. Today I finish the fajitas! @elpatroncito__ #elpatroncito #mexicanfoodporn #mexicancuisine #fajitas #rolledtacos #guacamole #dtlaeats @dtlaphotogroup @dtlaweekly @happeningindtla #dtlafood (at El Patroncito) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch8KRHoPsrM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
