Here’s a 1994 flyer for El Planeta a rock en español club in Lakewood, CA. BTW: There is now a gas station where this club used to be. In the mid-1990s there was a rift between the rockeras/os that would go on to shape the character of what “Rock en Español” or Latin-Indie would mean for fans and participants (promoters, writers, musicans). While many people first got to know “rock en español” as dance music that was part of the music club experience (which at the time included other genres such techno, house alternative rock, etc). Others understood that live performance by bands were essential and central to the genre. Hence, there were tocadas and noches de club. People who hated to dance and instead lived to experience live bands perform. Conversely, there were people who loved to go dance to “rock en español” but were rather indifferent to watch/listen local bands perform. Also, there were many “mutants” in between who would gladly navigated between going to dance and then go to the tocadas. Soooo, the question is: ¿eras de tocadas o de ir a bailar? 🤘🏾vs 🕺🏽💃🏽 Flyer shared by Guadalupe Rosales. Definitely check out her remarkable LatinX Youth Culture archives at @map_pointz which examines the rave scene and the party crews of the 1990s and of course, @veteranas_and_rucas Thanks for sharing! #elplaneta #carson #rockenespañol #1994 #rockarchivoLA (at Lakewood, California)

¡UNIDOS HACEMOS MAS!
