SALTBURN (2023)
Why is no one talking about the truly painful moments in Saltburn? Sure there may be controversial and shocking moments but the things that really got under my skin are being completely glazed over.
The whole beginning and how obviously painful it is that Oliver doesn't fit in anywhere in that school. That horrible feeling of being invisible when all you want to do is just matter, even to the teachers. When your academics aren't enough and you have to have this charisma from within that you've never had.
Oliver being almost like a pest and nobody wants to deal with him. So sad to be somebody's pet and people pity you and only tolerate you because someone more popular is your friend.
The awkward moment when Oliver tries to hit on Elspeth. Thank goodness it falls flat and makes her laugh but that was such an awkward moment that it made my skin. crawl.
The Henries party where Oliver is a room full of people but is completely alone and has nothing to offer anyone not even conversation.
Felix surprising Oliver with the trip home. Barry did such a great job showing the desperation of not wanting to be found out. And then when he was found out it was the most awkward and cringe moment ever. Finding out that he's not only lying to Felix about every single thing but he's also lying to his parents about his life at school. Felix's big smile but with rage in his eyes was so painful. Oliver hugging his knees wanting to sink into the floor and he knows Felix won't say anything in front of his parents because he's "too polite". He knows that everything is over and he won't be able to recover from it. The second-hand embarrassment I got was too much.
The lunch after Felix's death made me cry. The whole family tried to keep up appearances even though they are mourning the loss of someone they loved so much. Poor Farleigh being the scapegoat and so helpless. (And don't get me started on when they find Felix in the maze and his father is acting as if he's just passed out and not dead. That made me feel a type of way that I cannot put into words.)
Lastly Venetias death bothers me because it's not just blood in the bathtub, there's blood all over that restroom. To me it means she suffered. Maybe she tried to get up and get out and get help but she couldn't. Her death was so violent and so ugly. We see Oliver place razor blades next to the tub when she's passed out. How awful for her to wake up and see those and know exactly what he was trying to do. The betrayal and sadness that poor young woman must have felt.
All these moments stuck with me longer than the bathtub scene, vampire scene, or grave scene. After this movie ended I literally had to sit down, gather my thoughts and I wound up crying for about 10 minutes. I do love how everyone is seeing the romance in Felix and Oliver when all I saw was somebody who was so disgustingly obsessed with somebody that a kiss would never have sufficed. He had to consume him completely.
broke: being shocked by the erotic scenes, thinking its a bad class commentary that relies too heavily on artsy shots (criticizing the style not the substance, as it were)
woke: being a little freak whose into the eroticism, recognizing that its not trying to be class commentary at all, its just an excuse to film barry keoghans asscheeks
bespoke: realizing its neither a love story nor a class commentary, but both. and also a secret third thing (story about consent, vouyerism, and desire vs repulsion, that forces the audience to grapple with the classism and racism inherent in the dynamics it invites us to get off to)
“What a little shit stirrer.”
Archie Madekwe made a direct comparison between Farleigh and Regina George so obviously I HAD to draw it
