Hello darling I just started my adventure into acrylic painting on canvases and I'm in love with your art. Realistic painting is so hard for me, but I try and try because I love it. Please please give me some useful tips on how to improve and make my art look more realistic, or just any tips, I'd be so grateful. Thank you so much.
Oh gosh there are so many things I could say, and I’m no expert but I can tell you a couple things that work for me? First off, if you are aiming for realism then try to let go of your preconceived ideas of what things look like. Break down what you see into abstract parts and correct your proportions constantly. Being true to what you are painting or drawing means understanding that your marks will be wrong. A lot. That’s ok, it’s your job to find the errors and figure out how to correct them. Eventually, mistakes will be smaller and easier to correct as you gain ground as an artist. I see glaring mistakes in a lot of my older work that I simply didn’t see at the time, or didn’t know how to fix. You learn something from each piece, no matter how badly it may have turned out. Also, I think you have to realize that realism is an illusion. As a painter you don’t have to paint something photorealistic in order to it to look real, although it can be tempting to paint every last detail. You have the power to draw the viewers eye anywhere you want with edge control, contrast, color etc. Humans don’t have the ability to take in every detail at once; with every glance they choose to focus on something. For example, my shower painting focused on the drops, but the painting would not have been nearly as effective if the background had been in focus as well. So choose what is important in the painting and push it forward. Sorry for the novel and if my ramblings didn’t make sense…my ask is open if you have any other questions you would like me to further confuse you about! ;)
