“Honky Tonk” Broadsided
Tuesdays in March, follow the Vectorizing adventures of guest blogger Elysia Smith as she brings poetry and art to her Cambridge, Massachusetts neighborhood. (See all her posts here.) Elysia writes:
Back in December, I was on a trip to visit my best friend Heather at her home in Indianapolis. Mostly, we spent the trip in gal pal admiration of each other: "You're so pretty" "No, you're so pretty!" that kind of thing, but I did manage to find a neat spot for a poem at a divey Indiana bar called Dorman St. Buried deep in the cacophony of historic Indy, Dorman St. has been serving its patrons for nearly the last hundred years and certainly looks the part. It's a saloon complete with a jukebox and scarred pool tables. It's an unlikely place for a bit of poetry which is exactly why I saw opportunity. After buying a few good faith whiskeys, I managed to convince the owner of a broadside's merit and he even loaned me some tape.
Lo and behold, a collaboration between Suzanne Marie Hopcraft and Douglas Culhane [”It Is”] now graces the dark walls of the Dorman St. Saloon in Indianapolis.
Elysia Smith lives in Cambridge, MA in a house of pets, plants, and poets. When she’s not writing, she’s teaching creative writing at UMass-Boston, running various community service organizations, or preparing to join the circus.

Let me be tantalized by your roundness eclipsing the sun. Let me undress in the expanse of your light.

So Who am I and What am I doing?
This blog is to track and contain and demonstrate the process of writing my thesis and first book, tentatively titled, "Widdershins."
My name is Elysia and I'm currently an MFA student in poetry at UMass Boston. I'm a practicing poet witch and scholar from Indiana currently living in Boston with plans to one day join the circus as a tarot reading aerialist. On this blog, I'll post my own poetry, excerpts from short stories, photos related to my themes (witchcraft, tarot, goddesses, Wicca, Magick, writing, and cats).
I look forward to this journey and hope you follow along.

a celebratory poem from my forthcoming chapbook: "Glaucoma"
Distempered
The wedding dinner consists of corpses: two
and a handful of bitten nails,
like rice, and they are
neither his nor hers but rather
those ephemeral scrapings of a family: the same
seasoned iron pot.
Shake their two open mouths, watch salt pour—
the small fellowship of words.
People never tire of superstition.
Their scapulae still rub together: the sound
similar to photographed static of fore
[mothers] [fathers] hand-holding
under an archway of kitchen cutlery.
Bells ringing make them hallowed.
Bells ringing, softly
unheeded.
It is always like this.
They carry each other
slow and away from the body—
so careful not to crease the petals.
