Em has been living near the edge of the woods for some time now- close enough to civilization to be safe, but far away enough to keep away from regular human contact. Today, however, xe decides to explore deeper into the forest. Xe needs to get food, but Em is more curious than anything. It’s early enough in the day that xe’s fairly confident that xe can get back to safety before dark. Never assume that is true, however- that is folly, and how one gets trapped.

Sure, Em believes that the forest is alive, and that magic is real. It’s safer that way. But xe’s still surprised when xe encounters a strange being in a clearing.

“What a- what?” The words leave xer mouth before Em can even try to have any impulse control.

“I’m just a little beast, clearly.”

“Oh. Uh, well, hello. Sorry, I wasn’t expecting to see anybody here. Do you want me to leave you alone to do ‘little beast’ things?”
