Steamroller League - Game 2
Played the 2nd of 3 games yesterday, against a eMadrak infantry horde/brick. His list was:
eMadrak: (5wbp)
mulg (12)
earthborn dt(10)
pyre troll(5)
runebearer(2)
fenblades max+UA(10)
warders(8)
kreilstone max+UA(5)
fellcaller(3)
Couldn't take any pictures since we had to use my phone for Deathclock (60min/player), but a quick recap. We played Destruction. Since both his lists were decent against my Saeryn list I picked Rhyas... again. Really need to play more with Saeryn so I can figure out how it works and against what.
Anyways, it pretty much went as expected in the beginning of the game - he won the roll off and picked one of the sides, leaving me with first turn. We both ran against eachothers and clashed in the zone. However in his Turn 2 he threw caution to the wind and went all in with most of his forces, managing to clear the zone and destroying my objective giving him 3 control points. In return I sent in most of what i had left (about 1½ units of Warspears and 1½ units of Swordsmen) and managed to clear Mulg, 4 Warders and 9 Fennblades off the board. I had also secured a position where he would not be able to clear the zone in his turn. I figured I had him now.
However, I had not expected his next move. In one activation with eMadrak he managed to kill 5 Warspears, 6 Swordsmen and still keep a decent Fury Camp, that was about half of my forces at the time. In the same turn he also killed my only Heavy (a Scythian) with his Earthborn, leaving me quite low on heavy hitting power around his warlock.
To make matters worse my 3rd turn had taken too long, and I only had 12 minutes left on my clock (note to self don't get drawn into discussions not regarding the game when on deathclock).
Then I realized his mistake. He had forgotten that Rhyas now has Reach. Thinking himself safe in the zone I was smiling when I measured my control and realized she would be able to get the charge off without a problem. So starting with only the important models I cleared a chargelane for three of my remaining swordsmen near eMadrak and they charged in, hitting all three attacks and removing two of his fury and about half of his boxes due to some decent rolling (weaponmasters for the win). Then Rhyas charged in, her charge attack dealing only a few boxes of damage, leaving eMadrak on 8 box remaining. Her next attack managed to procure a Critical Hit (Decapitation), striking Madrak for 12 points of damage, which he transfered away. A few fury later eMadrak hit the ground.
I now have 2 wins, 0 losses (with one game remaining). The league is organized in a manner where the best player(s) in each league group (4 players) go on to a small finals tournament. Since I only have 2 controlpoints I can't say that I am not certain I will manage to get to the finals, but we will see. I hope to be able to play the 3rd and final game next week (against Skorne with either pMakeda or Zaal).
