the theme of pll is lesbianism and that’s final
Here is how the liars dysfunctional unrealized polycule dynamics primarily function; Sparia and Hannily are married couples, however both Emily and Aria were in love with Alison before she went missing which Hanna and Spencer are both insecure about because they both had complex psychosexual rivalries with her and especially Hanna always compared herself to her and modeled herself after her once she died and she’s always insecure that Emily only is with her as an Ali replacement Especially because Hanna’s ex wife Mona started seeing her because of her resemblance to Alison and even though Mona fell for her for real Hanna has never been able to see it that way because she felt too betrayed and heartbroken. Aria also has her Ezra thing going on because daddy issues combined with internalized homophobia and misogyny combined with his manipulative predation, which upsets Spencer far more than the Alison thing which she at least sort of understands. So to cope with their Spouses weird fixations Spanna are having an ongoing affair, which they both thought would be an unsustainable disaster but it’s going really well for both of them, they’re too in love with their spouses to ever leave them for each other but the arrangement really works for maintaining their sanity and they know they could be a great couple in another life. They also both believe themselves to be incredible at sneaking around / doing espionage but Emaria have known about their affair since like. One month into it, and they’re both honestly cool with it (Aria has complicated fucked up feelings about being sapphic but she’s probably the most well adjusted about being poly, and Emily just finds monogamy very confining and so thinks this is good for them. Hanna thinks dating multiple people is great in theory it’s just that her self esteem issues get in the way of her embracing it, and Spencer has internalized WASP guilt and shame about every single aspect of her personhood + is so very neurotic). Emily and Aria think it’s super endearing that their wives believe themselves to be keeping secrets from them which is part of why they’re letting it go on. While all this is going on Spencer and Emily have the most insane UST and chemistry out of any of them, and Hanna and Aria have an unspoken agreement to do everything in their power to keep them from having an affair because they just know it would completely ruin the group dynamic (they barely survived the Spona affair which was a dark and miserable time for everyone except for Mona), so Spemily keep up their freak behavior and sublimating said UST through intricate rituals in their married couple like arguments and divorce like 50 times without ever dating. Emaria and Haria do have more homoeroticism than is in the average friendship but compared to what’s going on in every other duo what’s going on there looks normal enough for them to compartmentalize and so they look downright platonic through sheer relativity.
I really love the girls' interactions because on one hand, we have the romance, the lovers, Emily and Alison, right? But we also have the confidants, Ali had all of Spencer's secrets on deck but she kept all of her own to herself. Spencer always challenged Ali and wasn't one to agree w everything she said. We then have Alison and Hanna, unlike Spencer, Hanna believed and followed every word Ali said, there was devotion, loyalty and yeah, a desire to be like her. Alison and Aria, their secret, Ali pushing Aria to tell her mom about her cheating dad. The complicity.
Now, the other relationships. Hanna and Emily, the very best friends, always supporting each other. Spencer and Aria have the greatest ideas and are the ones that get the other the most. Emily found warmth and someone she could talk to freely in Aria and Spencer gave her the best advice and encouraged her to do the right thing. Hanna compliments Aria's calm energy and Spencer kept all of them grounded but especially Hanna, since she's the restless one.
Pretty Little Liars wasn't the greatest show but it sure knew how to handle relationships and I love every single one of them.
It's understandable why Sparia and Hannily are the most discussed dynamics when it comes to the Liars, but I think that the bond and the scenes between Aria and Emily are quite underrated. They are similar but still different enough to balance each other in an interesting way.

PLL Core Four Favs
I love how all three girls had such vastly different reactions to Emily’s feelings for Alison after it was revealed she was alive.
Hanna’s very annoyed, yet also soft: “What’s going on with you two?”
Spencer’s extremely irritated huff: “It’s always the same with you two.”
And Aria’s sweet compassionate: “Do you still have feelings for her?”
It showcases their personalities in a way I’d never really seen before. I’d often said that I didn’t have a FAVORITE favorite liar (definitely favor Emily, but I really like them all), but on rewatches I see a lot more I like about Aria in terms of what kind of friend she was.
Spencer always bugged me for some reason and I could never put my finger on why. I appreciated her brevity, but she was always my least favorite (I’m once again on the wrong end of the fandom of that, because from what I can tell everyone seems to love Spencer).
Hanna had her moments. She made me laugh a lot, and she was also super-soft when she needed to be and I liked that about her.
But Aria was mostly kind (when she wasn’t all wrapped up in all things Ezra). I’m not saying she was perfect. She was a teenager who fucked up. They all did. But she had lots of great moments. So besides Emily I’d pick Aria as my favorite core 4. I don’t think she gets enough credit for being the sweet supportive smol bean she was (prior to the time jump, cuz let’s face it...they were all messed up after that).
And now I’m sad we didn’t see more of the Emaria friendship that we got in the books.
