Ematei
Location: 30 St. Patrick St.
J says: Ematei's eel-fried rice was how I finally convinced A that she likes eel. It was delicious. Most of the food was pretty good (fried fish, duck leg, tempura, etc), but after reading the hype I admit I was expecting a bit more character. The decor is a bit tired looking, but the service was good. The menu was interesting, and I'm much more excited about Japanese places like this than the standard teriyaki bento fare (which often barely qualifies as food, let alone Japanese food) but overall it didn't wow me. I'd still take this place over most of the places in the same area, though. Rating: JJJ
A says: This place has no website, has hardly anything written about it anywhere and is practically invisible, despite being right smack in the middle of downtown Toronto. It was however, recommended to us as an authentic izakaya dining experience. Izakaya style places are increasingly trendy these days, but I am not the biggest fan of the loud, crazy, crowded atmosphere that you would often find - so I was pleasantly surprised to find Ematei a quiet, relaxed space with friendly staff and good food. I don't know enough about Japanese food to say if it was any more or less amazing or authentic than any other slightly upscale Japanese place, but I did enjoy my meal. I say it's worth checking out!
