       S T R A N G E R S. they made his skin crawl with fear. he was good at avoiding them most of the time. except T O D A Y. there were so many buildings surrounding them. so many. and yet there they were . . . barricading themselves into the one he had chosen all of T E N minutes ago for him and sadie. there was no backdoor out of the place. he’d have to announce their presence eventually before they wound up D E A D. peering around the corner, theo kept his arm angled back in a way to protect sadie. to keep her B A C K. he needed to say something before one of them wandered back here. they had G U N S. 

      leaning back behind the safety of the wall, theo tucked sadie back a bit further and finally called out. “ we’re unarmed !! but we were . . . we were here F I R S T. ” it made him sound so childish. he cleared his throat. tried A G A I N. “ you can stay. just . . . don’t hurt us. and we won’t hurt you. ”
