And Baby Makes Four?
The saying, “baby makes three” doesn’t quite apply to those families with pets. Although bringing home a new baby is an exciting time for new parents, it’s important to not forget about your “first baby,” your pet. So whether “baby makes four or five, etc.,” your newest family member may rock the boat in your existing harmonious household. To avoid sibling rivalry, follow these important tips before baby arrives:
A new baby will demand lots of time and energy, so gradually accustom your pet to spending less time with you. If the pet is a “mama’s boy” or “mama’s girl,” another family member should develop a closer relationship with your pet.
Take your pet to the vet for an exam and vaccinations. Make sure they’re fixed, and their nails are trimmed on an ongoing basis.
Train your pet to stay on the floor beside you until their invited to hop up - your lap will soon be home to a newborn!
Encourage friends with babies to visit your home to accustom your pet to babies. Or, use a doll as a prop to help your pet get used to the real thing.
Play recordings of a baby crying, turn on the baby swing, and play with toys. Make this a positive experience for your pet by petting or offering a treat afterwards.
Sprinkle baby powder or baby oil on your skin so your pet becomes familiar with the new smells.
With a little homework upfront, your new baby and pet should be able to live together happily as one (now larger) family!
