Jan 8th, 2020 || First read of 2020 and it was a good one 🥳🥳. My Favorite Thing is Monsters follows Karen, a 10-year old girl who is obsessed with monsters and likes to investigate. One day after school she is told a woman from their neighbourhood has been killed although the police is treating It as a suicide. So she makes the decision to try and find the murder. Her investigation will lead her not only to Anka’s story (the murdered woman) but also to some family secrets. . I have to talk about the artwork first, though because it is absolutely stunning and more often than not I found myself admiring it. But it can also make the reading experience complicated. The art and the words look a bit messy and I had some difficulty at the beginning to follow the story and to get used to the author jumping from one thing to another without an explanation. . So my main complain is that I was quite confused at the beginning. Nevertheless, when Ferris focuses on Anka’s story it felt as if the whole narrative got perspective and she managed to get my whole attention. The story is set in 1960s Chicago and deals with many of the problems of the time. Race, grief, sexuality, the Holocaust, prostitution or identity are some of the few issues Ferris deals with in this first volume. Will read volume 2 for sure. .
