People doesn't try to defend their relationship 'cause it's tiresome to fight against a whole fandom, the SC, love to demonize James just because he exist. Personally I like GuardianCorp, I love how their relationship is. I just don't see the point of fight against SC because of it. Not because I'm a good and peaceful person, but because I've learn A LONG time ago that it's just a waist of time to try to defend James against the SC. This post is another proof.

Or some Supercorp and others rants about James and GuardianCorp because the writing of his character and their relationship is actually... bad ?

James was good and Guardiancorp a healthy het relationship last season (even me ended liking him and this ship, that’s to say), but since the begining of season 4 ? not so much.

I know you don’t watch S4 so let me resume the situation :

“Lena, don’t do anything I’m sure I’ll not go to prison because of the Guardian Thing, nothing will happen to me!” *Lena, work hard to save his ass from prison*

Lena, Nia, Kara, everyone : “James, you can’t go out as Guardian anymore or you’ll go in jail! And there’s SO MUCH more you can do as Editor of Catco, especially right now !!”

*James, shows up as Guardian in uncessary moment*

James “Oh no I showed up as guardian even tho everyone told me not to do it and now really bad consequences! I will complain about these consequences to Lena all episode!”

*Lena, tells him to not listen the bad people and find him an opportunity to try fix the bad consequences*

James: “ Instead of listening to you Lena and step down like I told you last season when you were in a similar situation as mine, I think I will choose to listen to the bad people and we’ll see what happen ! I know you’re worried like crazy for me since 5 episodes but I’ll continue doing what I want ! So store your feelings into your little box and just be there as my co-pilot to save my ass if anything goes wrong !”

Lena, us : 

Also, I don’t know if its just me, but I find their chemistry even worse than last season. The way they move and act around eachother is so not natural, there is no complicity, it’s at the point where it’s painful to watch seriously...

So for my part, THAT’s why I’m annoyed at James and GuardianCorp right now

It’s even more shocking that they use the word “gipsy” to describe him and his grand-ma all the time. I’m french, I totally see what you mean. I like the show, but this part bother me a lot.

I can’t stand it when they call him Gypsy as well and he doesn’t correct them. It is my understanding Gypsy its a slur?

OMG, the criiiiinge! I can’t believe I watched that interaction on a TV show in 2017. And in the flashbacks in Lem, Unchained, how they kept calling the grandma “that g*psy girl* was unbearable.

I’m trying to watch the show pretending they’re just a supernaturally inclined family, like the Winchesters or the Grimms, because the show makes such a circus of the Roma culture, it’s like they’re not even talking about real people. But the constant use of the G-word trows me off completely and makes me feel dirty.

When Manfred mentioned the “Old Continent” I thought he was going to mention prosecution, discrimination, the fucking Holocaust, but nope, it was just so we knew his family used to hunt demons.

With all due respect, just because there are so little Native-Americans here in Europe and they don’t exactly face discrimination here (I’m using NA as an example, because the numbers and the difference of treatment from one continent to another are comparable. Obviously, the cultures are not), if I were to make a show with a NA as a main character, even if I couldn’t find an actual NA actor to portray them, I wouldn’t make a mockery of the culture. First, because you don’t do that, to any culture, second because I’m well aware of how NAs are treated in their place of origin, which would make me extra-careful.

And what bothers me most is that the show comes across so ~woke~, with the different ethnicities, the rich female characters, the gay angel who fell for a Latino, and then makes such a horrifying blunder with the main character. 

We’re talking about people who get literally peed on while everyone laughs, for crying out loud!

Yeah, we just found this out last episode so I guess that my theory just got debunked lol.

It’s really annoying though because they still haven’t explained why C/aitlin’s powers make her evil when that hasn’t happened with any of the other metahumans on this show. Like yes, a lot of the metahumans that Team Flash encounter are villains but most of them were already bad people or they became villains as a result of circumstances they were placed in.

There has been no other metahuman that has such a drastic personality change from being non-powered to being powered other than C/aitlin and Frankie Kane/Magenta and the only reason that Frankie had such a huge personality change was because Savitar gave her the powers she had in Flashpoint and it was the two personalities that were clashing with each other that caused her to “become” Magenta so that’s why I originally thought Savitar was behind C/aitlin becoming K/iller F/rost.

I hope they answer the question of why K/iller F/rost has such a different personality than C/aitlin somehow because otherwise, C/aitlin going back to being a good person (since that will probably inevitably happen) is going to seem like such a cop-out. Knowing this show though, they’re not going to do that and she’s just going to be accepted back into Team Flash with open arms and just ugh lol

thank you!!! (sorry for never replying!). the course the essay is for is on youth, so that’s why teen girls are my focus (i love taylor swift too, but am older as well, and also not a ‘super’ fan). but i’m slowly getting there! i think part of the problem is that i’ve had to read some terrible takes (like this one by the creator of autostraddle, she literally calls taylor swift a feminist’s nightmare, and i usually really like her??), and then i get bogged down in thinking/writing ‘this is why the critics are wrong’ instead of the actual question oops (though i do think a lot of what adults hate about her is what young people love). but now i’ve managed to find some pretty interesting and nuanced stuff as well so that’s made it better!

one question i am really interested in, that i haven’t been able to find an answer to, is if and how her fandom has changed as she’s changed. taylor swift’s early stuff was obviously super relatable to young teens, but now that she’s older, is she still attracting young teen fans? if so, what are they relating to in her newer music that is different to what fans of the same age related to in her earlier stuff? is she now attracting a different type of young teen fan? or is her fanbase getting older--late teens for example? obviously there are similarities throughout her work (her voice, her vulnerability, her confessional lyrics etc) but there are a lot of differences as well. at the moment i’m just ignoring this aspect, but it feels like a bit of a glaring omission, but as far as i can tell there’s no scholarship addressing it. (it’s like “we’ll write about her when we can attack her for being a ‘bad role model’ but now that she identifies as a feminist and  it’s harder to level that charge against her she’s not interesting” am i bitter? lol)

I’m well aware that Ariela Barer is Latina, but this article isn’t about her. It’s about the character of Gert.

Gertrude Yorkes, who the article is about, is a white girl. If you want to talk about the fact that Runaways chose to cast a Latina in a white role without actually changing the role, feel free to do so.

However, Gertrude Yorkes is white, she’s the biological child of the CLEARLY white Yorkses in the story, etc. Ariela Barer playing the character doesn’t make the character non-white unless the narrative makes her non-white.

In fact, Ariela Barer is also a super cool feminist! Gertrude Yorkes, however, isn’t. 

(Also, fun fact: I checked out Ariela Barer as soon as I started WATCHING Runaways, because I’m Latinx, and I saw her and went “are they really having a Latinx play a white girl? what the fuck,”)
