Newspaper Reporter--Worst Jobs of 2012 (Part I)
For someone who is on the job search from the moment my eyes open to the minute my head hits the pillow (with usually dreams about it in the five hours of sleep each night), when I saw that CareerCast had named some journalism careers among the 10 worst jobs in America, it saddened me, but made me wonder if I should be surprised.
Here is the list of Worst Jobs:
Lumberjack
Dairy Farmer
Enlisted Military Soldier
Oil Rig Worker
Reporter (Newspaper)
Waiter/Waitress
Meter Reader
Dishwasher
Butcher
Broadcaster
Reporter:
No. 4 on the list of the worst jobs is as an oil rig worker. It is followed by no. 5 as a newspaper reporter. Is that a comparison? Because it's followed by WAITRESS. I've been a waitress for years, and honestly, would not hold my journalism career at the same level. While they are both difficult, are they on the same level? Absolutely not.
According to the methods of CareerCast, "higher point totals reflect lower quality environments." Reporter's work environment of below about 70. The next statistic did surprise me however, with the stressfulness of the job only at 44.75. For this, CareerCast explains that many factors go into creating the score, like physical demands, deadlines, and travel. As I can contest, as I'm sure all of you can as well (especially you, professor), the life of a journalist is by far a stressful one, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are specifically speaking of a newspaper reporter. While other jobs total about 100, it surprises me that this is so low.
One more point to leave us all feeling…well, not great! Hiring rate is listed at -4.75. Yes, NEGATIVE 4.75. If you need to look at the methods they came in figuring this out, anything under 1% is, well… very low. Oh really? Thanks, CareerCast.
In my next post, I’ll continue with the list, touching on the broadcasting career. Keep your heads up, fellow journalists. Until next time…
