I always wondered why Deaton picked Scott in season 2. I kinda could understand Deaton hedging his bets in season 1, waiting to see who would be left standing as alpha (Peter being just "a little" unstable). But by season 2 he should've been in Dereks corner. When Scott decided not to be part of Dereks pack, Deaton should've closed off all information. You're not part of the pack, you're not in the know. But by "helping" Scott with Gerard he clearly picked a side and it wasn't Dereks.
I think we make a lot of assumptions about what emissaries are–based now hat we think hey should be.
I mean, if an emissary is tied that closely to a pack, why didn’t Derek know that Deaton was Talia’s emissary? Why didn’t Laura know, and go to him for help after the fire?
There is a lot about emissaries that remains as ambiguous as hell. Deaton was the Hales’ emissary–except for Laura, Peter, and Derek!–but he was also clearly more about serving the balance than about actually intervening. Whereas Marin found ways to help, even when she was supposed to be staying out of things.
I mean, maybe that makes her a bad emissary (hard to say, since it was never explained exactly what an emissary’s duties were!) but I’d rather have her on my side than Deaton, that’s for sure.
