The Fade
The Dream Is Solid
Breaking Down
Broken Down
In the early stages of development, the fade followed a green tint from previous games. The idea was to have fully playable sequences, and as the player progressed through the story, “the dream” would gradually break more and more.

The Fade
Solas: One of my oldest friends has been captured by mages, forced into slavery. I heard the cry for help as I slept. Dread Wolf: “From this moment, should you ever bind a spirit, then your life is mine.” — The Dread Wolf Take You
How many times did Solas hear spirits crying out to him for help? Especially after the veil went up.
I can easily imagine these spirits bound by Tevinter mages calling out to him to save them, and Solas answering those cries with fury. It makes me think about all the legends of the Dread Wolf where he would "gleefully patrol the Fade, feasting on the souls of the dead." How many of those stories were actually Solas responding to spirits in pain or enslaved? And feasting on the souls of the dead? They weren't dead when the Dread Wolf found them, but they certainly were dead after he dealt with them for harming spirits.
“But whatever fear the name of the Dread Wolf carries, he has earned. While we might visit the Fade, it is his natural home, and the spirits there serve him gladly."
The spirits serve him gladly - I like how this Mortalitasi (one who supports binding spirits "as is only right and natural" by the way), presents this as though Solas owns the spirits (that's their perspective and bias), but they serve him gladly and Emmrich confirms that spirits think highly of Solas, Spirit Speaker - so much so that he was surprised by it.
And we know why - these are just two narrative occasions of Solas responding to cries of help from spirits but I imagine there are, sadly, so much more. And honestly, no wonder Solas wants to tear down the veil considering how many cries for help he may hear as he sleeps.
And I want to
Fill your sleep and haunt you
To see the mess you've made
You've made
And I want you
And all my dreams are no use
When I am wide awake
And I want to
Believe I haven't lost you
It's driving me insane
Insane
