Summary/Request: Sometimes feelings change, and sometimes you have to go out on a limb
You and Emma had been friends since Middle School and with that came the closeness that meant many people asked if you were dating or told you you should be dating. It was one of those things that just happened. At first it had been annoying, embarrassing even. She was your friend, you couldn’t be dating her! But, soon you just started dismissing it, taking it for what it was. Harmless.
That all started to change senior year as graduation approached. Emma, you and the rest had been through what seemed like hell from Piper to Kieran, you’d seen more death than you really should have at your age. But you were all getting better at handling what you’d been through and things had seemed normal for a while. Simple even.
Until you realised that the idea of dating Emma, that everyone had put forward so many times, was starting to actually appeal to you more and more each day. You were two weeks from graduation and the urge to tell Emma how you had started to feel, that you wanted to keep seeing her after school and in more than a friendly capacity was beginning to become unbearable.
That’s really how you found yourself outside of Emma’s house, a bouquet of flowers in your hands and a speech prepared in your head.
Your first knock was weak, nervous and you forced yourself to knock louder on the front door, hearing the footsteps approach and hoping it was Emma and not her mum that came to the door. Luckily or unluckily for you it was Emma who opened the door and turned a shocked expression towards you when she noticed the flowers in your hand.
“Y/N?”
“Look, just...just let me get this out, okay?” The speech had completely gone from your head and you were left a stumbling embarrassed mess in her doorway, a shaking bouquet in your hands.
“I...realised that while everyone joked about us getting together that actually I kind of, um, really want that. I want to go on dates with you and hold your hand and buy you things and mean them romantically. I don’t want to just be your friend and we’re graduating in two weeks and I know that you probably don’t want to date me back, but I had to say something...” It’s one long spiel and your glad she doesn’t interrupt you because you doubt that you’d have been able to continue on if she had.
You look at her with what is probably a mixture of hope and fear as she takes the flowers from your hands, picks at and observes them for a second before looking up at you with that bright smile that you know well.
“I’d really like that...I didn’t want to say anything in case you didn’t feel the same but...I think i’d like to go on a date sometime? After graduation? We could go out for coffee or something?”
“Sure...that would be-I mean, I’d really like that, Em.” The two of you stand there smiling at each other for a few moments too long before you, point behind you with your thumb.
“I should...probably go..” You shift on your feet for a few seconds, “Bye...see you soon?”
“See you soon.” You smile at her as you walk backwards and nearly trip down the stairs like a buffoon. But she said she wanted to go on a date and you really didn’t care if you looked like an idiot anymore because she wanted to go on a date with you.
