This is a painting I did of the fabulous Eddie Ayres. For those non-Aussies out there he’s a radio presenter on the ABC here, and I’ve painted many a piece listening to the dulcet tones of Eddie. A pleasure to paint. The meeting was finally over, although I could have sat there all day observing the interplay, dominance and compromise of the soldiers, the police and the civilian officials. A living, breathing version of rock-paper-scissors.

One day I was so in the zone with Vita, the road was so smooth and the wind so kind that I cycled two hundred and seventy kilometres in a day. As I swung my leg over the saddle to get off at the end, I was in a completely altered state; as a sailor has sea legs, I had bicycle legs, still spinning as I walked into a truck stop.

The prelude starts with a cheeky little moment’s silence; the first note comes on the offbeat and hurtles down a baroque staircase to the middle of the violin, where the notes are thrown around in a tumble dryer. Then they all leap up an octave, as if this time they are poking their tongue out at the wimps down below. It always makes me think of little kids romping in the playground, endlessly moving and taunting and jousting and laughing. Then they all join hands and spin and spin until they get so dizzy they fall apart, and start the whole thing again.
