Do you have any tips for training a dog to recall? I have an incredibly active/spirited boxer (she’s almost 3!!!) and she doesn’t always come when called at the dog park or even in the yard. She will almost always come when I have treats but those aren’t allowed at the park so it’s somewhat frustrating. Sometimes I can use my Mom Voice and she’s like “oh sorry” but often times she just doggy smiles and continues with what she was doing. She’s extremely well behaved and polite otherwise.
*obligatory disclaimer about how i’m fairly dumb about dog training*
If she responds well when you have treats, that is probably your best bet as far as practicing goes. What I like to do is put my dog on a long leash (30′ or so) and then let him get distracted by something/wander a bit away from me. Then call the dog + slight tug on the leash to get their attention, and then once they come over to you they can get their treats/toy/whatever reward you’re using. Once they can do that reliably, eliminate the tug on the leash so that they get used to immediately focusing onto you once they hear their name/command, and associate hearing that with “it is fun to run back to the human when they call me.” then after that you can graduate to off-leash low-distraction places such as your backyard, then higher places like walking trails or dog parks. Even if you don’t have treats with you 100% of the time, like in a dog park, always reward consistently with outside. You want to get your dog in the habit of recalling so that it becomes an automatic response, esp in a park where you may need to call your dog away from an altercation, for example.
Also what might be happening as well is that your dog has associated recalling with “fun’s over, time to go home.” To counter that just keep doing lots of practice and rewarding, and then let your dog go back to playing/exploring afterwards. If you only ever call your dog when you are leaving somewhere, your dog will learn that if they come over to you their fun stops, so you want them to get used to recalling very frequently without interrupting their play so that it loses any negative implications. You can even use recall training as a game - call your dog for attention, then run the other way, and most dogs can’t resist a game of chase and will realize that oh boy, coming back when called is FUN.
recall IMO is one of those things that’s use it or lose it; if you don’t keep up rewarding and practicing consistently, dogs learn to tune it out pretty quickly. it might also help to use a specific command for recall instead of just their name; boone i am transitioning his command to a whistle, because that’s a louder sound that gets his attention immediately more so than just me talking.
if any other dogblrs want to chime in with advice then please do!
