Haunting Ground
Thilbault Desmaisières and his wife, Emmeline (née Denay). Thibault and Emmeline are both researchers at Université de Saint-Loegaire, though they are, unusually, in completely different disciplines: Thibault is an anthropologist and Emmeline is a physicist. It is generally expected that women who continue to pursue science after their marriage will do so as part of their husband's research teams. Instead, continued to be part of the only all-women research team alongside Ismérie Thimerais and Chwfé.
Emmeline Denay had just turned 20 and was under considerable pressure to marry when a member of her research team was approached by Thilbault. Her parents, unwilling or unable to support a spinster daughter through an academic career, were running out of patience. Emmeline knew that marriage would most likely spell the end of her burgeoning career, as she would be expected to abandon academia in favour of the home or, almost worse, to join her future husband's research team and become little more than a footnote in his research. She also knew that she could not stall forever.
Thibault, sole heir to the Desmaisières, had spent many years doggedly avoiding matrimony. By his mid-thirties, rumours of homosexuality, threats of an arranged marriage and financial abuse had made his status as a bachelor untenable. Not wanting to condemn a housewife to a loveless marriage, he'd set his sights on young women scientists, hoping to find someone who loved her work enough that she would trade her chances of a loving home for the chance to continue her research. He'd unsuccessfully approached a colleague of Emmeline when Emmeline came knocking at his office.
With great distaste and some resigned relief, they'd found they could come to an arrangement: a marriage of convenience to ease pressure from their families, an heir to come, and support for Emmeline to continue her research independently.
They were married with great joy from mostly everyone else, and to their mutual surprise, rapidly became fast friends, a measure of solace in the mundane horror of their situation. In time, the horror faded back into the background noise of all the great and small injustices of life, just as love for the daughters they conceived through gritted teeth eased the bitterness of the memories. Both would qualify their arrangement as a happy one without dishonesty, careful not to mention they would much rather have not needed an arrangement in the first place.
I cannot be trusted with my own finances, and I don't care.
I am making a breathtakingly expensive impulse purchase thanks to the aforementioned Bernadette Banner video binge I dove into this weekend.
See, I was already contemplating investing in a refurbished antique sewing machine, once I've finally purchased my own home (along with a refurbished piano, but that's another matter altogether and will be subject to availability of space and soundproofing).
Antique because they're beautiful pieces of machinery, they're resilient tanks (especially compared to modern sewing machines with planned obsolescence) and it's easier for the sewist to regulate the speed to their own comfort and pace (also unlike the modern sewing machines I'm familiar with, which scare me more than a little).
And then I watched Bernadette's video about her mid-19th century chain stitch sewing machine and... I fell in love.
The beauty and resilience of the chain stitch, the simplicity of skipping a bobbin entirely, the compact size and the quietness of the device all really strongly appeal to me.
So I looked online on a whim, to try and get an idea of price, and... I found one.
Same maker, I suspect even the same model, with the original carrying case as well!
She's a little more worn and tarnished than the one Bernadette received for her video, and the timber carrying case is definitely going to need a lot of TLC, but she appears to be in working order!
Anyway, I was talking with a friend (who absolutely abdicated all attempts to dissuade me from this purchase), and realised I already knew this old beauty's name... Which pretty inevitably meant that I have to purchase her!
So, meet ✨️Emmeline✨️
Her seller lives in the same suburb where I commute to the office once a week, and has even agreed to drive to the block where I work to let me inspect and meet this lovely old lady after I finish work this coming Wednesday, before exchanging any funds.
And I am SO EXCITED!!!
Hello. Regarding the nsfwhump ask game, I'd like to send a 🏨 (Has sex ever sent them to urgent care?) to any characters for whom the answer is some form of “yes”.
Thank you. :)
- @for-the-ouchies
OOOH that list was fun, thank you so much for the ask!
This is tricky in that some of my stories are set places that wouldn't have an urgent care? Like fantasy worlds, merfolk, etc.
Emmeline and Arinn are both set in some version of the real world and modern times, and I'd classify them both as "yes-ish". They have both had painful and harmful sexual encounters for which they should go to urgent care, but don't because they fear being discovered as immortal/incubus.
"I'm sure your invitation was just misplaced. I mean, you can't even begin to imagine the hours of calligraphy that went into them, Lucille was very particular. Yeah, yeah, I'll tell her-... Mhm. Okay, have a great evening," Emmeline grinned so widely she must have looked a little unhinged. When they finally left, she rolled her eyes and turned to find the nearest drinks tray.
"Hey, if you see Peter, can you just confirm that I was here so I can ghost ASAP?" @tfrstarters
happy international women’s day featuring my oc’s
i beg for some emmeline vance hcs 🙏🏻
hiii!! i am SO sorry for the late reply, ive been rly REALLY busy with exam prep 😞
but anyway, here are some of my hcs for her:
she's really ambitious, and she wants her name to be known and her biggest fear is being average and insignificant
the sorting hat put her in ravenclaw because of her unquenchable thirst for knowledge and curiosity
she is a MAJOR fan of caffeine and caffeinated drinks
pioneer of gatekeeping and loves being niche (lowkey has an individuality complex)
very competitive and takes everything seriously and personally, even if she pretends she doesn't
a chronic complainer, she can nitpick everyone and everything from start to finish
tries to be mysterious and nonchalant but is often larger than life and loud
her secret talent is origami, and finds it relaxing
never satisfied with anything and always wants more
biggest defender of plaid, plaid skirts especially
would listen to marina and the diamonds. 100%
Definitely has to wear reading glasses (cat eye frames) and doesn't like to wear them on a daily basis because 'it messes up her curated image'
hair is always all over the place, but always refuses to tie it up
a very old-preppy-academia style, lots of whites, blacks, muted blues and purples
a raging lesbian, dated a lot of men for a while because she thought she just 'hadn't found the one'
half vietnamese from her dad's side, but went to hogwarts because the entirety of her mom's family went to hogwarts. She's also an only child
friend group consists of amelia bones, edgar bones, hestia jones, benjy fenwick, amos diggory
closest with amelia bones, had a crush on her for the entirety of her school years and beyonf (in another universe they ended up together)
knows how to play 3 different instruments- the piano, flute and drums (this was because she wanted to, it was a random choice but she found joy in it) and is very musically talented, even from a young age
jealous of Lily, Lily's basically her lacy and she hates her and loves her and wants to be her and wants to be with her and-
was really excited to prove herself when she got into the order, only to be overlooked and overshadowed, leaving her empty because she tried so hard to be known and it didn't work
then the 2nd wizarding war happens and she's excited again because finally! she has a chance to not be an average, ordinary witch again! but she gets killed trying to make a name for herself and in the end, it was all for nothing
her body couldn't be recovered either, so she never had a proper burial, forever lost to time
Bloo would be known as Lyssa and spend her time being adored and waited on. She has the most fabulous wardrobe, the best toys, and both parents in her life.
Emmeline loves her daughter with all her heart but is worried about the role Lyssa has to play. At 14, her time is already divided between playing and reaping souls for Levistus.
