This is just amazing. I’m only in Chapter 5 but it’s a brilliant read so far.

It was so weird that he refused to eat it at all and Paul was just like, you can’t hope to bake if you refuse to even taste what you’re doing.

Rec: This is somewhere between a magic AU and science fiction, with some Medieval fantasy thrown in to round things out. It reminds me in some ways of Chryse’s A River Without Banks, and it’s right up there in terms of the quality (and emotional devastation) of the story but it’s not a derivative by any means. It’s original and plotty, with details that at first seem trivial which turn out later to be of seminal importance; surprising twists and reveals that shine a new light on the events of series 3; and throughout it all the universe as a character with its own motivations and means of achieving its mysterious ends.

There is indeed major character death but there is also redemption and second chances, if bittersweet ones. One thing I really liked was that all of the major characters (Sherlock, John, Mary, and Moriarty) were treated as complex personalities. They all have a ‘bit not good’ side as well as moments of insight and empathy, and none of them are untouched by love.

Rec: I loved the subtlety of this piece from the point of view of Archie, the little boy from John and Mary's wedding. It covers about 15 years, starting just after the wedding. No infidelity.
