"You can pet me," Allison Janney said as she approached reporters on the Emmys red carpet Monday. Her dress, a velvet magenta number by Nicolas Jebran, was begging to be touched. It looked soft -- like the kind of material that might line a fancy pillow.

Janney, a "Masters of Sex" cast member, was well-versed on her outfit; she'd settled on it after trying on 30 dresses, and her publicist had brought a rack of 200 over to her home.

"Beyonce wore this designer last night," she bragged. "So I'm on point."x
