“I just don’t understand why you’ve been acting so reckless lately, Dean.”
Her voice was wrought with worry, on the verge of arguing, but he could tell she was holding it in. Truth was, he had been reckless lately, but he was afraid to tell her why.
Dean shrugged her off. “Danger is my middle name, Sweetheart.” He winked and she damn near slammed him.
“Don’t you ‘Sweetheart’ me, Dean Winchester!” Her fist balled at her side as she dug her nails into her palm in an effort to relax. “Something is going on with you and-”
“It’s nothing!” He threw up a hand as he cut her off, turning his back so he could adjust his face. He didn’t need her to worry, didn’t want to see that look of pity in her eyes. He just wanted things to be normal, at least for a little while longer. “It’s nothing.”
Y/N lifted her eyes to the ceiling, trying to focus on the water stain above her head rather than rip him a new one. When she felt the tears rise, she knew what she had to do.
“Fine,” she said calmly, “fine.”
Dean turned back to find her grabbing her backpack and stuffing her dirty clothes into it. She pulled her bra from the back of the bathroom door and tossed her toothbrush into the front pocket of her bag.
“What the hell are you doing?” he asked, stunned as she rushed around the room retrieving lost socks and half empty toiletries.
Refusing to look up, she spoke with her head down, diligently packing her things. “Ya know, Dean, after all we’ve been through, after the year of hell we’ve just had- losing your father, almost losing Sam- I…” She trailed off as she zipped up the bag and hoisted it onto her shoulder. When it was in place, she looked up, eyes wet but resolved. “Dean, if you can’t trust me after all that to tell me what’s going on, then...Then I can’t be here anymore.”
His face was like stone, jaw clenched tight, eyes fixed at the far wall. When he didn’t speak, she took that as a goodbye and stalked towards the door behind him.
Dean’s hand shot up like lightning, fingers wrapping around her upper arm. “Wait.”
She held her breath, inches from the door, and closed her eyes.
“I’ve been acting like this…” His fingers tightened, needing her there to make the confession. “I did something stupid, Y/N/N.”
Her eyes opened and she stared at his hand around her arm. “It’s OK, Dean. We can figure it out.”
“No.” He shook his head and chewed his cheek. “I made a deal,” he said in a dark whisper. “I made a deal for Sam. I had to do it. I- he was my responsibility and I failed him.” His upper lip began to twitch as his voice tightened. “I had to bring him back. I had to. I didn’t have a choice.”
When his breath tightened so much she could barely hear him, Y/N shoved off his hand and dropped her bag, turning to take him in her arms.
“How much time have you got?”
A tear slid down his face and Dean hid it in the crook of her neck, holding her close, afraid to let go.
“Seven months.”
Y/N stiffened, drawing in a sharp breath.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N/N,” he whispered, pain painting his words. “I had to. I had to.”
She held him close, staring off at the far wall, refusing to let her own tears fall. This moment wasn’t for her, but him. And he needed every goddamned second she could give.
“It’s OK, Dean,” she promised, rubbing the back of his head gently. “It’s OK.”
“Please don’t go?” His voice cracked and she nearly did as well.

“I got the popcorn!” you called as you entered Dean’s man cave.
A break in cases meant you and the brothers had decided to throw a movie night. Just the three of you, a few beers, plenty of snacks and some good movies. But, as you entered the room you found you were the only one there.
Pouting lightly, you placed the bowl of popcorn down on the coffee table before heading out to find either brother. It was Dean you bumped into first.
He was seated at one of the tables in the library, feet up and phone in hand. The look on his face instantly told you he was playing Words With Friends, and just as quickly you felt your hopes fade.
“What… what are you doing?”
Eyes still on his phone, he shrugged. “Playing a quick game. Then I was thinking about going to a bar. Have some drinks, play some pool.” He shrugged again.
That’s right about when you felt your heart crumble.
“Oh, okay.” Nodding, you started to back up, wanting to get out of there before he noticed you were hurt.
But, at the sound of your retreating footsteps, he looked up right in time to see the heartbroken look in your eyes.
“Hey.” He dropped his phone onto the table and his feet to the floor. “Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
Shaking your head, you continued to back out of the library, averting your gaze. “It’s fine. I just… I thought we were all having a movie night and I was really looking forward to hanging out with you… and Sam. You and Sam.”
“Oh… didn’t Sam tell you?”
Pausing, you frowned lightly as you looked over at him again. “Tell me what?”
“There’s a movie a few states over. I was gonna take us all, but he said it was a documentary on Ancient Greece, and I’d honestly rather die, again, before watching that. So he left. Said he was gonna tell you before, though.”
“Well, he didn’t.”
Dean wanting to go to the bar was bad enough, but knowing Sam also didn’t want to spend time with you hurt even more. You hated being second choice, you hated the idea of being alone. But you were a hunter, and reality had a habit of biting you in the ass.
As you went to leave, Dean quickly shot out of his seat. “Why don’t you come with me? We could get some nachos, drink some beers, have some laughs.”
Offering a small and gentle smile, you shook your head. “Thank, but no thanks. I just wanna stay home tonight.”
Walking away, leaving him to do whatever he wanted, you headed back to the man cave to grab the popcorn before heading to your room. Even though you were going to be alone, you still wanted to spend the night watching movies. Only now, you were probably going to watch all the ones Sam and Dean preferred not to watch.
As you rounded the corner, entering your bedroom, you came to a stop. Standing there, by your desk, was Dean.
He looked a little lost and unsure as he stood there with two beers in hand. “I… I don’t like seeing you upset.”
“I’m not upset,” you tried to reassure him.
“No, you are,” he insisted, stepping closer. “And it’s my fault. I assumed that with Sam gone you wouldn’t want to do the whole movie thing. And I didn’t really wanna spend another night hanging around here doing nothing. So I thought going to the bar would be a good distraction.”
“A distraction?”
Nodding, he stepped closer again. “See, there’s this girl. She’s a little shy but totally awesome, and I like her. But I didn’t think she liked me, too.”
“Oh…”
Moving closer still, he finally stopped a step away from you. “Then I saw how upset she looked when I told her I was going out, and I realised I’m an idiot. Why would I want to go out and leave her here alone?”
Your heart was hammering in your chest as you looked up at him. “You’re not doing this because you feel like you have to… are you?”
Shaking his head, he reached out and cupped your cheek. “No. I’m doing this because I want to.” Then, slowly as if not to scare you, he leaned in and pressed his lips to your in a kiss that would lead to many more.
