Dealing with emotions in a healthy way
Ok guys so today i’ve been a little upset and angry with some family issues and I remeber that when my patients describe situations like this I usually recommend them an emotion dealing technique, and its been so long since i used it myself so, as a therapist, i must live by the example. I performed it a little on the rush because i’m actually in class but it still helped me chill and collect myself quickly so i thought i would pretend to take notes whilst i share with you the steps
These are 6 easy steps:
1. Stop: dont run or avoid your emotions. Take a seat and a moment to start this technique.
2. Labeling: name the emotion. Not only as “good” or “bad”. If you are feeling several at once, try to identify which emotions of the 6 basic human ones are involve (joy, anger, disgust, sadness, fear and surprise) . Your brain is in distress; but if you use your minde to name the emotion, your brain will stop feeling threatened as it know what it is feeling and you will immediately start getting calmer.
3. Body parts involved. Locate within your body where is the emotion is being felt (belly, toes, head, chest, etc). This will help you to know yourself and your physical reactions to emotions better.
4. feeling it: once you know what are you feeling and where, feel your emotion or emotions. It is there for a reason and you should not avoid ignore or minimize it. You are entitled to it and the more you avoid it, the more it will stay and keep cntrol over you. Feel it for at least a whole minute. If you need to cry, do it. If you need to laugh do it.
5. Breathing. You are now ready to start letting it go, assuming you want to. Most of the times, we refuse to let go but we actually need to in order to improve and think more clearly and assertively as your brain is now flooded with emotions. You will close your eyes, sit or lay down, relax your body and breathe in counting slowly 1-4 mississipis. Hold your breath 1-2 mississipis and exhale slowly in 1-6 Mississipis. You will do this at least 3 times but if you need to repeat it more times, do it. When you breath, direct the air towards your belly, if u lead it to your lungs you may hyperventilate and it will make everything worse.
6. Let it flow. The next step is to let it flow out of your system in any way you can and want to: talking, writing it down, drawing, smashing glass, etc. However you must not hurt yourself nor other in this
I learned this technique from my therapist a couple of years ago and now as a therapist I recommend it to my patients as well. I do not know where or who did he learn it from.
