I think that something people forget about ships and their creators/authors is the amount of time that is dedicated to them. The pure emphasis of them. When you don’t intend something to work, you don’t put work into their relationship as much in that area.

The amount of time and effort that has been put into Rowaelin is, almost undisputedly, probably the relationship Aelin has the most investment in so far in the series. That is, on a depth level. He practically 2 whole books to show his deepening relationship with Aelin.

And before anyone mentions Chaol, their relationship almost literally was torn apart in CoM. And in QoS she apologized to him for saying she’d always choose him. She said she was sorry about that. Indicating that, now, she was wrong about that. Because the message of that particular entire thing was: not everything goes according to plan. Even with people you love. Sometime they become people you loved. (on an overall level that is)

As for Dorian? He is King of Adarlan. She is Queen of Terrasen. A relationship with him would upset, like, everyone from Terrasen, okay? That needs to be said. She didn’t think about him at all in CoM practically and she spent half of QoS deciding it’d be more merciful to kill him. In all of that, there was not a single romantically inclined thought. She did not want to kill him because she cares about him. Why can’t that be enough? Would you want to kill your friend you happen to care about very much? I didn’t think so. And before anyone cites the earlier books, to be honest? Anything before HoF is Celaena because that book was her turning point. She became Aelin in HoF. And Aelin has not given Dorian and single romantic thought. (But she does love him-- as a friend.)

Compare the amount of time and depth given to each relationship up to now (especially after HoF) and Rowan, honestly, wins out. Sarah spends more time on him and Aelin whenever she gets a chance, it seems.

I.e, SJMaas sure has spent a lot of extra time with Rowan and Aelin’s relationship beyond “you’re good for me and I’m good for you right now and it’s going to help us move on from our past” as it was with Chaol and Dorian. Both of whom’s relationship officially started and ended in a single book. Throne of Glass for Dorian and Crown of Midnight for Chaol. Note how Queen of Shadows ends with Rowan and Aelin getting together. This. Is. An. Important. Distinctive. Choice.

Subtle signs like that are kind of important and get you a small peek into the writer’s thinking/intentions.
