Empty Roads
We drive with no destination just the hum of the engine and the windows halfway down because it feels right that way
The town loops endlessly the same gas stations glowing the same red light that never changes the same street we swear looks different at night
You control the music switching songs every thirty seconds claiming they all “hit wrong” even though we sang anyway
We talk about nothing old jokes, fake plans people we’ll never see again somehow it all feels important
The dashboard clock blinks 11:49 then 12:00 like it’s keeping score of how long this moment lasts
We pass houses lit up warm and quiet imagining our lives inside them wondering when ours will start to look that settled
The road stretches out like it’s offering answers but we don’t ask any questions
Because right now it’s enough to be sixteen miles from home a quarter tank of gas left and my best friend beside me
Laughing too loud dreaming too big driving nowhere and somehow feeling like we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be
