not that i’ve been thinking about this excessively or anything but obviously if there was a tsoa miniseries. and i was making it. i would title all the episodes after the ways patroclus says he would know achilles as in

01. i would know him blind - early years

02. by touch alone - pelion

03. in dark or disguise - skyros/beginning of the war

04. even in madness - majority of the war/achilles stops fighting

05. in death - the death of patroclus

06. at the end of the world - the fall of troy/achilles and patroclus reunite in elysium

my theory is that tsoa patroclus actually loves killing and maiming and violence. i don’t mean this in a like “fuck the text he should kill” way, i mean it’s a viable reading in the text that he loves killing and maiming he’s just really embarrassed by it so he keeps trying to lie to the reader and excuse it

achilles doesn’t think at all when he kills and only occasionally really invests in the morality of it - he doesn’t care about killing, doesn’t love it or hate it. he loves glory and murder is incidental. but patroclus from his youth is inclined towards violence and then punished for it so he grows ashamed of it, and because he cannot get rid of his feelings he tries to push it down and swings the other way. he hates it, he claims, he wants to do good for others, he hates fighting and killing. except then he puts on achilles armor and he fucking loves it!!! he loves it so much that when a literal god throws him off a cliff he goes back for more!!! it’s just that being in achilles’ armor, being ACHILLES, provides him an excuse to do it. he repeatedly tries to undermine it like he tries to undermine his killing of clysonymus but just like it was there it was all of his own volition - miller chose an interp full of gods and if she wanted to blame it on an aresteia explicitly she could have. but she didn’t. because when patroclus says he’s not a killer he’s LYINGGGGGGG
