Hummingbird Hawk-Moth
Macroglossum stellatarum
Is it a moth or a hummingbird? Resembling the hummingbird, thus its name, the Hummingbird Hawk-Moth inhabits a wide area from Portugal to Japan in warm climates. It is known as “bee moths” in Europe. Its proboscis - a long tubular mouthpart (tongue in this instance) assists in feeding and sucking up pollen and moisture. It is a day moth flying around during the light of day. The Hummingbird Hawk-Moth has orange-brown hindwings and forewings that are greyish-brown and a black and white checkered body.
