Had an incredible afternoon shooting on the eastern side of San Elijo Lagoon yesterday. Sometimes nature puts on such a spectacle that it is truly beyond words and for me it's an incredible privilege to witness it. When I say that my heart races during such moments it's not an exaggeration. For me to witness animal behavior on such a scale is unbelievably exciting, it's what dreams are made of. With spring here two incredibly powerful forces are influencing animal behavior, an abundance of food and mating season. These two powerful forces means a lot of territorial battles and in the case of these Vaux Swift it meant swarming as they battled for food. I wish I could adequately describe how incredible it was to witness. Imagine hundreds of tiny birds all swarming into a massive black cloud moving in unison. The entirety of this giant cloud descends down to the water and disperses as birds spread out everywhere like a wave. There were splashes everywhere as the birds flung themselves into the water to get the insects and larva they eat. The noise was monstrous as they fought each other in mid air for the food. It was an incredible spectacle and I felt like i was not just watching an episode of planet earth but I was a part of it I have always dreamed of being able to see such things in real life. I could just imagine hearing a musical score and David Attenborough's British voice narrating what was unfolding in front of me. We are treated to such amazing displays of beauty in nature every single day. Have you been outside lately? If you haven't then you must, for there is something happening all around us that just must be seen. A wondrous ballet is taking place, the stage is set and the performers are ready....spring is coming! The air is clean and the breezes gentle and cool carrying with them the sweet scent of wild blooms. It is a time of rejuvenation, cleansing and rebirth for the landscape. Colors are exploding, the scenery is vibrant and rich and absolutely saturated with activity and vibrancy. This is one of my favorite times, we escape the dreariness of winter and while I can appreciate winters beauty I do look forward to the awakening of the land when spring comes. Everything comes alive in a truly spectacular way, a land once in hibernation now filled with life. I love watching all of the little pieces that we take for granted take center stage. Take the honeybee, we probably don't give it a second thought unless you get stung. Yet this magnificent creature that dwells nowhere near the top of the food chain nor does it boast great intelligence is one of the most if not the most important building block to our landscapes. As a pollinator much rests on the honeybees tiny shoulders, for they spread the material that makes plant reproduction possible. Without them our ecosystems would collapse in ways that we can't even imagine. Incredible how one tiny creature can make such an incredible impact. So go outside, enjoy this magical and short lived time to the fullest. Breathe in the sweet air, listen to the birds, enjoy the breeze.....let it transport you away from the chaos of modern life. Look who I found again this morning! Still trying to find where it likes to catch fish and what time of the day it's most active. That's really the shot I'm after a low to the water shot with spread out wings and talons extended. Finding unobstructed views with a long enough run where I can smoothly pan has been a challenge. It's been so much fun watching him take to the skies though soaring free, patrolling his territory. I noticed a second osprey this morning, so who knows there might be a few little ones come spring time. All of these outings have been a great learning experience for me, refining how I do things or walking away with a new observation on behavior or hunting pattern. All of these are building block that will culminate on getting that one shot that is ever present in my head. Lots of action this afternoon at san elijo lagoon in Encinitas. The light was beautiful and the wildlife was on full display. Territorial fights, fights for food, males showing off and this snowy egret doing some of the craziest stuff while hunting for fish. It is absolutely amazing how birds can be so similar to one another and yet have their own way of doing things. For the most part the larger egrets I've photographed have all been very methodical and slow moving when they hunt. They slowly follow their prey for that opportune moment and then they strike with blazing fast speed. This snowy egret was completely on the opposite end of the spectrum. He would move slowly for a little while and then all of a sudden he would run around like crazy, striking wildly at fish in the water. Here he just took off all of a sudden and flew a short distance while tracking its food. Two things it did had me fascinated. One: he would use his feet to probe through the mud, it was clearly visible that he was feeling around under the water. Two: he would flap his wings with incredible force, not to fly but for some other purpose. This is mere speculation but I did notice this several times. His wing flaps would cause ripples in the water, you could see that small fish would come to the surface and swim away when this happened, within a second or two he would strike and several times has a fish in his beak. He was corralling the fish so they would be easier to strike. I have never seen an egret display either of those behaviors and it was absolutely fascinating to watch! It is amazing to sit and observe the many things that occur in such a short span of time and in a small space. The life that inhabits this world is vibrant, diverse, dynamic and incredibly intelligent. Some beautiful and challenging conditions yesterday at swamis beach in Encinitas. I love capturing the never ceasing locomotion of the ocean through speed blurs. It brings a sense of peace and serenity to the scene that is absent when a crashing wave is perfectly frozen in time. Both approaches are valid but this one speaks more to my heart and how the ocean affects our hearts and spirit. There is a soothing that comes over a person when near the ocean, wether it be the sound of crashing waves, or seeing perfect curling waves or the water particles that come off it in the wind and carried through the air to places unknown or a combination of all these things the effect is undeniable. The ocean brings a relaxation to the human spirit and to the body, its effects are immediate. Tense muscles relax and weight is lifted in an overpowering experience. For me being around the ocean is a celebration of power and motion and that's how I like to capture it. Late in the day the light is subdued and colors are saturated making images like this possible, in this I get lost in its surreal power my mind traversing its perfect shape through blurred lines depicting speed and unceasing motion.
