The Endless One
If I have Animar on the field and I play a card with X in its Mana Cost how would that work? Could I play it for say 5 mana and have 6 +1/+1 counters on it?
When you cast a spell with X in its mana cost, you choose a value for X as you cast it, then that value is plugged into the mana cost before any cost reduction effects are applied.
So let’s say you have an Animar with three +1/+1 counters on it and you want to cast Endless One. You can choose any value for X (up to what you can afford to pay, of course), and even though Animar is going to reduce its cost by 3, you can choose for X to have a value of less than 3.
I’ve made a chart showing how much you pay and how many +1/+1 counters Endless One will enter the battlefield with based on the chosen value of X, for values up to 7:
Heya Charlotte! Hope you're well! -- Altered Ego, X = 3, copying Endless One. Three counters? Or six?
Three.
From the release notes that came out today:
If the chosen creature has X in its mana cost, that X is considered to be 0. The value of X in Altered Ego's last ability will be whatever value was chosen for X while casting Altered Ego.
