Endorphins Lost — Night People (To Live a Lie)

The grinding, crunching powerviolence of Endorphins Lost is a long, long way from anything even remotely resembling postpunk, but the band’s songwriting method may remind you of one the rules from Graham Lewis’s famous manifesto for Wire: “When the words run out, it stops.” Wire’s early songs were buzzing, whirring machines, tensely crowded and anxiously succinct. Endorphins Lost’s songs don’t buzz or whir; they pummel and thunder, full of rage and explosive volume (and near continuous, raging explosions). But the Seattle-based powerviolence outfit also tends toward the succinct — and thus to at least one other of Lewis’s dictums: “No rocking out.” There’s no time for solos or posed grandiosity. By the time you notice the absence of ornament or faux-emotive excess, the song is already over.

The brevity of nearly all the tracks on Night People (they tend to clock in at just over a minute) runs counter to the record’s dominant themes: the endless agony of poverty, the psychological and material violence that accompany homelessness, the ongoing horror of pathological paranoia. That stuff will keep you up at night, as the title track asserts. Trading verses, vocalist Kerry Hall and bass player Brandon Haydon holler: “The street at 3 am is glistening with desire / Nothing without misery / Opportunities for a street-minded leech / Remember yesterday’s mistakes / And see tomorrow’s bodies.” There’s seemingly nothing poetic there, just the raw energy of need and pain. But “glistening with desire” is unexpectedly observant. Even addiction, madness and criminal intent can glitter. 

The music is a different matter. It doesn’t glitter, it steamrolls and sprints — suggesting responses to the street’s demands and dangers. So, while the principal social problematics of the songs are ongoing, seemingly ceaseless, the specific narratives and scenarios are more focused. Songs like “Uptown Traffic” and “Funerals to Come” run on bursts of aggro dynamism, effectively dramatizing the rhythms of drug addiction and corner economies: there’s a lot of waiting around, and then sudden, sometimes violent, sometimes ecstatic activity. Endorphins Lost tends to focus on the sudden, the violent and the ecstatic aura of extremity. 

That accumulates into a volatile, contradictory energy between the intractable issues, which seem beyond action and effective intervention, and the visceral insistence of lived experience: this is happening (emphasis on “this,” its granular presence), this is happening (emphasis on “is,” its immediacy). Endorphins Lost understands that energy and uses it. See “Bounded Choice”: “Free to roam within your cage / Free to think of freedom.” Go ahead, pace inside the bars and obsess. Capital could care less. Meanwhile, another three songs from Night People have blasted past you, with the palpable impact of the real. And no rocking out.
