Also NARRATIVLY she’s important!! She helps further Izuku’s development as well as help us understand Mirio’s character! Not to mention show us just how messed up a superhuman society can be. ALSO some parallels to Shiguraki in that her quirk destroyed her family, and she was abused by Overhaul. The DIFFERENCE being that she was SAVED. 

Like, as a character in a story, Eri is important for many reasons. 

Also fuck that person she’s a child that mostly likely has PTSD so like. Yeah.

He’d been writing notes the night before, but now the notebooks all bent – spine bent, pages creased, ink smeared by sweat. Yeah, not sure how that happened since– what? Sweat all over. Gross. He groans, and wiggles on the bed; slept funny, now his hand’s got the tinglies, creased by the bedsheet and his back. Apparently, he has a talent for sleeping like a terrible murder victim, body contorted in the night. He needs a shower.

Ethan bangs his head against the top bunk, hard enough to make his vision swim and forcing him to collapse back on the bed. An interrupted snore above him tells him that he’s not alone. He looks, and finds Mia but no Neil. Ethan hopes he’s found somewhere safe to sleep. Unless he’s up already and gone… wherever.

Ethan pats Mia’s hand lightly, aware that his skin is tacky with dry sweat, and he’s drenched with more of it still. How hot was it last night? is his first thought, because nightmares are too easy to remember come the following morning, even if they drift away just as easy as tumbleweed once he’s more than a few steps out of bed. Nevermind that his head’s cotton-twisted and his mouth is just as dry. And yes, there are bottles, all empty on Ethan’s desk, neatly lined up in two rows. Two by three.

Yes, he’d asked Mia to stay with him last night. Struggling to stand in her doorway, asking if she’d stay the night to just sleep. Didn’t want… didn’t want to choke on his own vomit in the night.

     “Sure. … You look a bit pale.”

Anyway. Shower time.

The bathroom’s cramped: shower stall, toilet, sink. Not a lot of space to derobe, really, but he manages it, even if his head is spinning a little, becoming light-headed. Shower time, he thinks, blinking hard, shower time. But the water doesn’t help. Too hot? Making him dizzy? Turn it cold. Yes, shock to the system, but his head is still stuffed-to-near-bursting like a teddy bear. His legs are wobbly.

He needs to sit down. Preferably before he pitches forward and defenestrates himself on the glass divider. Horrible sight, if Mia ever stumbled upon that. He likes her too much for that. Even if he weren’t crushing on her like the head-over-heels fool he is, he likes her entirely too much do that to her.

So now he’s dripping with sweat and shower water, bare-assed on the shower stall’s tray, head to knees ( or is it knees to head, with such a small step from bathroom floor to shower stall tray? ), breath shuddering through him. A snippet of something floats through his head, intangible, but it was from as recent as last night. A nightmare, then, and not the heat. But the swirling head must be because he got up too fast ( did he? ).

     “Ethan?” A knock at the door. “You in there?”

“Yeah.”

     “… You OK? You sound funny.”

“Just a bit dizzy. I’m fine. I’ll get a shower in a bit.”

     “Do you want me stay with you?”

“Uh–” He doesn’t trust his legs just yet to stand up and pull a towel over himself just yet. Unless he can reach– “I’m naked right now, so it’s… fine.”

A startled(?) laugh from beyond the door, then, “Alright, I’ll stay this side.”

“Cool beans.” He’s sure he hears Mia echo it back, higher-pitched, and giggle.

Later ( much later, about an hour later ), he’s fresh and clean except for his clothes and underwear. He can change later when Mia’s… getting ready or she leaves for her own dormitory. A shy wave when he comes out, and Mia returns it. “Your bed’s a mess.”

It is. Rumpled to hell, bedsheet pulled from under the mattress, and still soaked with sweat.

“Yeah. Sure is.”

Mia pats the mattress of the top bunk, grinning at him. Ethan gestures at his clothes. “I slept in these. I need to change.” Hint, hint. But Mia just shrugs. An indecent thought ( change in front of her, but only if she truly doesn’t mind ), then soon rids himself of it, choirboy decency. “I really need to change.” To her credit, she turns away, humming and spreading out across the mattress as though falling asleep again. He changes clothes and underwear on the bottom bunk, then climbs up next to Mia.

“Hey.”

     “Oh, hey, Mr Winters, fancy seeing you here.”

“Uh, yeah?” Epitome of wit, there. Mia laughs. She doesn’t want to do anything, “just chill out”, and honestly, Ethan’s absolutely fine with that. His head’s not much clearer than before, and the metal band of a hangover is clamping over his brain, but he’s feeling wonderfully calm here, with her.
