The Summit
Her two children stood there before her, silent. The final breath of Mother was exhaled from her crippled form, there upon her gilded throne, and as the last light of her vision faded, her children saw her fall.
The clatter of thorns upon bough rang clear in the night. The bow Aerwyth bore she abandoned, a pitiful, agonized scream tearing from her lips. The battle had been won.. They defeated the monster! Its crippled form had flown off into the sunset, screeching and wounded, bearing home the tale of its defeat to its master.
The ranger slid herself down on the grass, frantically coming beside the Pale Tree. “M-Mother!” She cried in anguish, surprise, and horror. The luminescent sylvari, hesitant at first, placed careful hands upon shoulders that did not move, trembling. “M...Mother..?” Aerwyth shook. Tears welled up in her obsidian eyes. “Mother--! Mother!” Weighting her feet into the ground, heaving with a pained gasp and a sob, the ranger turned her mother about onto her back. “Mother! Mom!” Her body quaked with choking tears. With her knees to support, flat upon the Omphalos floor, Aerwyth lifted the lifeless body of her mother, cupping her, so gently, in her weakened arms. “Mommy..” Down her petaled head fell, tucking against the forehead of the one most dear. “Mommy.. Mommy please. Wake up..”
He stood behind her the whole time, motionless, blank, white, unfathomable eyes gazing down in horror at the shape of their defeated mother. He couldn't move. He couldn't feel. Fists clenched themselves tight at his side, his teeth grinding.
Endyn couldn't. He wouldn't.
The sobbing echoed loud across the Omphalos chamber, the only sound filling the room after their adversary had fled. It was unnaturally silent. Unbearably silent. No wind, no birds. Only the muffled sounds of the two wayward children.
Black, deep, pleading eyes turned upwards to stare at her companion. “Endyn,” Aerwyth whispered from trembling lips. “Endyn, help me..” Fingers tightened their grip on the Pale Tree's shoulders. “Endyn... Endyn what do we do..?”
---
“Whats going on up there? Do we have a visua--” The worried chatter of all who gathered beneath were cut off suddenly, abruptly. From above them it came, a great, agonized scream, defeated, horribly sad, the symphony of its pain accentuated by a sudden burst of brilliant, white hot fire.
---
Endyn knelt before the Pale Tree, hands, palms splayed, defeatedly laying on his lap. Behind him, a crater, still smoking, groaned in the wall. Tears fell from his own impossibly pale eyes, silent tears, as he gazed at the defeated body of their mother.
“Mother... Please... Wake up.”
