- You debuted in Korea last year in April, and after a year you’ve decided on your Japanese debut. Do you think it’s fast?
CNU: I’m not sure how it is like for the other artists but I feel that it’s not too fast, not too slow. It’s a good timing?
Baro: We did not have the urge to hurry with our debut in Japan, but to be able to debut in Japan makes us happy, because we could allow more people to listen to the music we like too.
- Who have you spoken to about regarding your Japanese debut?
Jinyoung: …Because we’re been so busy, I haven’t spoken to anyone about it yet (laugh). But my family and friends will probably find out from the news articles.
Jinyoung: Even though it was so when I sang, I discovered the effectiveness of the song during the music video shoot. We were really tired when the filming continued through the night…
Members: That’s right. So tired~
Jinyoung: But the song wakes you up immediately! So I felt once again, ah.. It’s a famous song. It’s an enjoyable song.
CNU: Your strength just rises.
Baro: When we filmed for the original Korean music video, there were parts in our dance, gestures and expressions that we were not satisfied with. But after dancing a lot to it during our Korean promotions, and practicing the Japanese version a lot during recording.. We feel more carefree in expressing our emotions in our second round of promotions, as compared to the first.
Sandeul: You’ll never get sick of this song~
- Is the Japanese language difficult?
Jinyoung: Almost half of the lyrics to Beautiful Target is in English. So it was not as difficult as we expected.
CNU: We also practiced our pronounciations a lot. In the Japanese language, when you get a tone wrong the entire meaning changes. I put a little more effort in that part.
Baro: There weren’t much troubles in my rap too. But it was a little hard to match the rhymes? We studied Japanese hard!
Jinyoung: We are attending Japanese language classes, and whenever we have time we memorize vocabulary.
- The recording of your other song Bling Girl was directed by Jinyoung, right?
Jinyoung: Yes! We spent 9 hours recording it. The members helped out and the recording went perfectly. The atmosphere was good, so the people recording feel good too.
CNU: Bling Girl is also a song that you can gain strength from after listening to it. We who sing it gain strength too!
Jinyoung: Whenever we record, the members will each obtain a topic and challenge to clear it. It all comes out on the song. I think we matured a lot in this point.
CNU: When we’re all done singing, we listen to it at once together. It is very realistic, as we listen to each other’s voices and say things like, “Ah, you’ve improved here~”.
★ Secrets of how the members have changed?
- So from now on, we’ll be carrying on the solo photoshoots… Please talk about how he (the person not present) has changed after debut, and how he has not changed. (laugh) Starting with Baro?
Gongchan: During OK days, he was like a child but starting from Baby I’m Sorry he became manly! Recently when I look at Baro hyung’spictures I feel that he is handsome.
Jinyoung: He has matured a lot with regards to his thoughts. He has been reading books often lately, so his vocabulary has increased too. He’s working hard at self-development.
Sandeul: Baro does really well at self-management, he does it consistently.
CNU: In the waiting rooms of music broadcasts, the other members would be asleep from fatigue but he’d be reading a book. I feel that he’s working really hard.
- Who is always sleeping?
Sandeul: ……..(Chooses CNU with his finger)
CNU: I don’t always do so (laugh).
- How has leader Jinyoung changed?
CNU: He has not changed with regards to how he works hard when composing music. Even during our busy promotional period, he’d be composing through the night despite being sleepy. That side to him is extremely cool.
Gongchan: He is a man who does not know of giving up. He does something until it reaches perfection. Whenever we record, he keeps getting us to repeat in order to improve the quality of our vocals. That’s why he has the nickname of “also”. (Pointing to Sandeul) He is the victim of the “also/as well” attack, having to leave and wait. We keep hearing Jinyoung say “it’s good now but do this also”.
Sandeul: Yes… I am always in the recording booth (in a small voice). Ah! Jinyoung hyung just looked at me. Scary! Jinyoung hyung has matured and grown more handsome as the days pass… as well (laugh).
Gongchan: Also… We keep hearing it so it’s stuck to our lips (laugh).
Sandeul: Also (laugh). Jinyoung hyung keeps on doing aegyo these days as well.
Gongchan: If we’re talking about recently, isn’t it Sandeul hyung?
Baro: Because Gongchan is the youngest, he has much aegyo. But in Sandeul’s case, rather than aegyo…
Gongchan & Baro: You’d want to strangle him? (laugh)
- Jinyoung has returned and CNU has left. Please talk about CNU next.
Gongchan: CNU hyung has not changed a single bit since the past. He’s always slow (laugh). When we’re done with practice and we all leave by car, only CNU hyung doesn’t come out. If we had to talk about what he does instead… He checks if all the lights are switched off, since he is the mother (laugh).
Jinyoung: He has changed in the way that he doesn’t waste his efforts by challenging himself to improve and he works harder than ever.
Baro: And as compared to when we first debut, he jokes around less. Maybe he’s busy, or tired but he no longer jokes around with me, he’s gotten tired of me. At those times I get Sandeul to play with me (laugh).
Sandeul: Despite being sleepy (laugh).
- How about the youngest, Gongchan?
Jinyoung: After turning 20, he has matured and now has clear ideas on what to do to be better. He’ll be a dongsaeng who will turn out good. He has not changed in the way that he still does aegyo to us? Our maknae will be our maknae forever, so I hope that him doing aegyo to us doesn’t change too.
Baro: He hasn’t changed in his ability to calmly access a situation.
CNU: Rather than being calm, there is something you can look forward to? (laugh)
Jinyoung: He is a child who breaks with a snap.
- And lastly, Sandeul?
Jinyoung: His appetite has not changed (laugh). He has changed in the way that he is able to tell the members about his challenges in life after we debut. As the main vocal, there are many troubles that he holds to himself regarding singing. But that is a good change. To have many troubles means that you develop faster.
Baro: His passion for singing has not changed. It has in fact increased! I think it has changed slightly from the past; after we started living together, the connection by music has molded Sandeul’s personality into a much brighter one.
Gongchan: His face and body have become cooler. Before debut he wore spectacles so it was a little tacky, but just him removing his spectacles he’s become much cooler. Also, after he ends his dieting carried out during our promotional period, he gains the weight back. It’s possible to gain the weight lost from self-management (laugh).
- Please say a sentence each about your feelings about your approaching Japanese debut.
Jinyoung: More than being tense, we are nervous. We have worked hard for our Japanese debut. We want to hurry meet everyone, and stand on the stage soon.
Baro: My heart goes dugeun dugeun at the thought of the Japanese debut. I can’t fall asleep!

Q. The Japanese version of Sleep Well, Goodnight is a fresh dance song composed by Jinyoung!
Q. Why?
Jinyoung: The chorus is sung in falsetto, hence I thought if it would have been better if I gave it to a female singer instead. But Sandeul’s reaction was so good. I was really glad that everyone said it was good.
Gongchan: I was the only one who did not manage to hear it at the same time with everyone else, but I was more sober than them (because they heard it after getting awoken). I thought it was a really good song. As CNU hyung said, it is of a different style from what he used to do, and hence we decided upon it as the title song for our next single.
Q. The lyrics of the original Korean version were also penned by Jinyoung, and it does show a more matured image compared to as before, with an outlook on the world.
Jinyoung: I guess so. At first I wrote lyrics along the line of dancing together, but it eventually turned out to be about getting rid of a girlfriend and then going to dance.
CNU: The theme of the lyrics is a ‘cute player boy’.
Sandeul: Normal player boys usually enjoy themselves after getting rid of their girlfriends, but for us cute player boys, we give off the feeling that our girlfriends are liberal enough to allow us to go dance.
Jinyoung: Cute player boys who are sorry to their girlfriends for going to play alone.
Q. So the leading character of this song is Jinyoung?
Jinyoung: No no, it is not a personal experience. (laugh) I have never gone to a club before, so most of it is from imagination. It was written with the members in mind. For example, I imagined what Baro would have done, if he was a player boy.
Q. So if you were a player boy who got rid of his girlfriend to go play, where would you go? [T/N: Getting rid here is not a negative meaning, nor does it refer to a break-up. More like temporary separation, for the day etc.)
Jinyoung: There is someplace I’d like to go in the day so I’ll get rid of her in the day. There are many people who cannot ride rollercoasters even though they like it right? I want to go to the amusement park, ride rollercoasters and eat cotton candy.
Sandeul: To a cafe. I’ll order an Americano, turn on my laptop, and give off a vibe that I’m spending time alone… While waiting to meet that somebody.
Baro: You might still be alone even after your coffee is cold. (laugh) I will go to Han River, and eat chicken and drink cola.
CNU: I will devote all my time to the girl I’m dating, as I want to always be with her. After I get rid of my girlfriend and make some personal time, I will watch movies that I did not get to watch.
Baro: I will risk everything for the one woman I give all my heart to.
Jinyoung: Everyone is like that. I too, will never cheat on my girlfriend. I’m worried about not being able to see a girlfriend that I’ve gotten rid of.
Gongchan: If my girlfriend oversleeps, and there is no one who will play with me… I’ll probably go back to sleep too.
Q. How was recording in Japanese like?
Gongchan: It was not our first time recording in Japanese, so we’re more used to it now and are starting to enjoy it.
Baro: Jinyoung hyung did our vocal direction.
Q. We’ve heard that he is surprisingly strict.
Sandeul: I thought that I’d never be allowed out of the recording booth. (laugh) It was absolute hell when we recorded Bling Girl, a song made by Jinyoung hyung, and is also included in our debut Japanese single. I was really scared before we started recording this time, but I managed to understand the demands of hyung a little faster.
Jinyoung: I kept asking for a higher quality, so the recording time extended by a lot. I think I gave the members a lot of difficulties with my “if we sing more, the song will become better” mindset while recording.
Baro: It was hard for him to direct a Japanese song, but I think we perfected the song thanks to him.
Q. The other songs included in this single are cool, strong and electro. Japanese versions of Baby I’m Sorry and So Fine have been included.
Jinyoung: So Fine is a song that has received much love in Korea. I rearranged it for the Japanese version, and added some klaxon sounds. You’ll be able to feel a fresh charm that is different from the Korean version. I believe that upon listening to these 3 songs, listeners will be able to feel how diverse of a group we are.
Q. A song that you would like to listen to before you sleep?
Gongchan: Sung Sikyung‘s 당신은 참… (You Are So…). It is a slow song, and comfortable enough that the moment I put my earphones into my ear, I will fall asleep. It’s really nice to have a voice next to your ear as if it’s whispering to you.
Baro: Justin Bieber‘s Die In Your Arms. The lyrics have absolutely no correlation with sleeping (laugh) But it is a really calming song. It sounds really good in your ears, so please try listening to it before you sleep too.
Sandeul: Kim Dongryul‘s 편지 (Letter). The lyrics speak of an old letter as the theme, and has a back story of revisiting the past. The lyrics are bittersweet. Whenever I cannot fall asleep, the voice in this ballad lulls me to sleep.
CNU: Robin Thicke‘s The Sweetest Love. I’ve always been a fan of his voice. This song has a slight jazz feel to it, and I feel like it’ll be nice to listen to it before sleeping.
Jinyoung: will.i.am‘s This Is Love. Rather than listening to a soft song, I like to listen to something brighter to release the tension. This song is not only upbeat, but it also has a sad feel to it. The arrangement is well done, and do pay attention to the piano sounds and the phrases in the song!

Q: If you say B1A4, then you can always think of a unique dance that is always talked about. Please tell us one of the points in your “Oyasumi good night -Japanese ver.-”
[Jinyoung] The key dance in “Oyasumi good night” is the “cute playboy dance”.
[Baro]“Cute playboy dance” = wave dance! You can dance it with a dance team, it is a fun dance that everyone would want to copy after watching so I think it is a dance that everyone could easily have fun doing!
[Jinyoung] You move your hips in circle during the <Who~ Who~ Who~> part of the chorus and it is supposed to express the cute playboy’s behavior of feeling guilty towards his girlfriend but still wants to go out to play!

[Jinyoung] I would like to watch all DVD’s of movies I wasn’t able to watch then go out and shop, and eat good food. Then I would like to go to Namsan Tower to appreciate the night view of Seoul.
Q: You have a really tight schedule.
[Jinyoung] Yes. Because we don’t get a lot of breaks, I would like to do whatever I can’t usually do however I want!
[Sandeul] I want to stay up all night watching movies while eating popcorn and drinking cola.
[CNU]I also want to watch a movie. I used to watch movies while pausing is it every 10~20 minutes, but then I wasn’t moved by it that much after watching it like the……(force smile). We were not able to properly watch a movie in a theater after our debut so if I have the time, I would like to go watch a movie in the theater.
Q: What kind of plot do you prefer?
[CNU] I don’t like horror, so anything besides that.
[Sandeul] I wouldn’t want to watch a horror movie that night either. If I stayed up all night watching horror movies, I think I would throw up all of the popcorn that I ate from getting too scared.

[Gongchan] As we said before, Sandeul hyung isn’t sexy (laugh).

Jinyoung: It's a pity but it does show only when I'm working. The members always make fun of me saying that I live frivously. (laugh)

Jinyoung: I usually accept the results calmly, but because it's my first time challenging medium tempo R&B song, the pressure was huge. When I let the members listen to the guide track, they all said that it was good but some of them were worried. But so long one of them liked it, I saw hope in that.
Q. How do the members solve a difference in opinions?
Jinyoung: Since I first started composing, there are rarely any differences in opinions when the staff and members come together to discuss during a meeting. Jinyoung: I have learnt that I need to create music that everyone can relate to, not music that I myself like.

Jinyoung: I ask people that I meet about their past love lives. And I try to understand the emotions from the viewpoint of that person. After making myself out to be the most pitiful I can, I write the lyrics. (laugh)
Q. They say that blood type A men play well alone, do you agree?
Jinyoung: There are times that I am comfortable being alone but I usually like being around people. I get lonely easily so ever since I was young I would bring my friends home.
Ceci: So living in a dormitory is right for you.
Jinyoung: I am really happy whenever the members welcome me back home after I finish filming my movie or drama alone.
Ceci: Do they monitor (the drama/movie)?
Jinyoung: We watched the drama and movie together. Even though I was so embarrassed I couldn't lift up my head.
Q. There are many things that you've probably had to give up. Do you feel that it's unfair?
Jinyoung: When I started working (as an idol), I made a firm resolution so I have no regrets. I've always liked to live busily. The holiday that you get after being so busy is as sweet as honey.
Q. Your current roomate is Sandeul. Are you satisfied?
Jinyoung: I am very satisfied. I think I will cause trouble for the neater members if I roomed with them. It's better to use the same room with people who are messy. (laugh)

CNU: When we were trainees, I gained the habit of observing the members as the eldest. I would point out their wrongdoings and scold them too. CNU: When we just debuted, I was not able to express myself well. I would keep it to myself when I was having a hard time, and I couldn't express my affection for the fans. But now it has improved a lot. But this time at the concert, I unknowningly said that we've had our difficult times and caused the fans to worry. It was unlike me to have whined to the people who came to receive positive energy for us, and I regret it.
Q. If you were able to change rooms to get rid of your tired mind?

CNU: I see it as time invested for a brighter future. It may be difficult now, but how many people are actually able to do the things that they like as their job. I will always be thankful and think of this positively.

Q. They say that blood type A men are cautious and scared of change.
Sandeul: I am even more so when it's regarding my vocals. I feel that I have to protect the voice that I have now through proper techniques, so I do not dare to try other things. Recently I've been changing bit by bit. I would hum along to rap - that is something I can never think of doing in the past.
Q. You getting accepting the musical department of Myongji University is a huge change.
Sandeul: I went to school today too. And I ate in the student cafeteria too. But because I didn't choose my schedule correctly, I haven't been able to meet my fellow freshmen yet. Gongchan: If I start doing something, I would see to the end of it. I had to perform a stunt on a diving program whereby I had to jump backwards, fold my body into half and plunge straight into the water. Q. We also hear that when you get your hair and makeup done in the mornings, you don't take the elevator but use the stairs instead?
Gongchan: I'm impatient. I always want to get things over and done with quickly, so it's comfortable to get my makeup and hair done first then rest.
Q. We hear that you take pictures all alone. What pictures have you taken recently?
Gongchan: (I took pictures) at a BBQ party with the hyungs during the filming of a Japanese variety program. I want to learn more slowly, and work hard at taking pictures to show them to the fans in future. It'll be interesting to start up a blog too.
