Friday Night Lights (TV show)

This source is a television show that previously aired on NBC from 2006 to 2011 called “Friday Night Lights.” It is about a small town in Texas called Dillon that only cares about one thing, and that is football. A new coach steps in to take the job of the football team, and is expected to win a state championship or else it’s a failure. As the show mainly deals with football, many other important values like family, faith, and friendship are highlighted and shown throughout the series. Not everything goes perfect, but the community always seems to find a way of getting together and making everything better, and that is football. This show is all about the sport of football, and it stresses the importance and love for the game that people really have for the game. Football is more than a game to people, and their emotions are fully engaged in to nothing else. This source is useful because it deals with football and the importance of the game.

This source is a video interview that was done by the Huffington Post. They interviewed Connie Britton from NBC’s very popular “Friday Night Lights,” and asked her questions regarding a phrase, “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose,” that was referenced many times throughout the series. The phrase came during times of need and was used to help bring light to whatever situation was happening. It gave strength to people when it looked like all hope was lost, and Britton talks about how that phrase even helped cancer patients. The phrase is used many times in reference to football and the community. It was coined by the head coach, Britton’s husband in the show, and that is how he got his team to get their heads straight and overcome the obstacle. The show primarily focuses on football, and how much of a great sport it is for everybody in the community. Football is all that the town has and has ever known, so they take it seriously. The sport is all about grinding and overcoming your opponents, and the phrase is something that really describes football in a spiritual way. This source is useful because it deals with football and the way it impacts people. It is the most popular sport everywhere for a reason, and the state of Texas will most definitely prove that because everything is bigger there.

Pearl Harbor: The movie

Pearl Harbor was directed by Michael Bay and was released in 2001. This movie, based on real historical events, follows American boyhood friends Rafe McCawley (Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett) as they enter World War II as pilots. Though based on actual events, the movie is fictional and highly romanticized. 

This movie is important to my paper because it is one of the three movies set in WWII that I am using as examples for how movies manipulate historical events.  In Pearl Harbor, even the attack on the naval base was manipulated to the point of no longer being historical accurate at all.  The problem with this is that most audience members don’t understand that this movie is fictional and they view the events portrayed in the movie as fact.  It also only shows the American perspective and depicts the US as the good guys in every situation.

Struckmann, S., & Karnowski, V. (2016). News consumption in a changing media ecology: An MESM-study on mobile news. Telematics And Informatics, 33309-319. doi:10.1016/j.tele.2015.08.012

In this article, Samson Struckmann goes over the different choice in device in different situations. He is specifically focused on which device people choose for news consumption. Not only that but, going one step further, in finding the choice in device for specific situations. He describes the changes in media ecology and gets into social networks by going over the “rise of mobile (online) media.” This article, I believe, will help my paper cover the aspect of electronic devices. This can be beneficial by seeing which means to consume the news, is best, when newspapers are no longer an option. This may not seem useful, but if the data is studied deep enough, researchers could possible use the data to find out why these devices are preferred over newspapers, such as mobility, and accessibility. My whole paper is based on the question of what is the best way to consume the news. I can use the same strategies that Stuckmann used to find the answer but use newspapers as the secondary option.

Annotation 9 - Culture 2

On the website, Debate.org, arguments are put up, for the whole world to vote and comment on. What’s cool about the website organizes the arguments by which side that person is fighting. In this argument in particle, they are trying to see if people think the internet needs to be stopped and America needs to stop advancing, or they think that the worlds population can’t live without the internet. The results were 53 percent to 47 percent in the stopping of the internets favor. In one comment in particular under the side fighting against the internet, a person with an anonymous account puts his two cents in about the situation. He states that “the rise of new technology has, and will continue to contribute to the rise of unemployment,” and also that the internet “threatens the young and naïve minds that children are slowly losing.”

This source is sort of ironic. A comment for a guy completely against the idea of advancing technologies, however he leaves the comment, obviously using an electronic device himself.” That point in itself, shows that people are hypocrites and even though they complain about the internet taking over, they never make any action to work towards a solution. This shows the problem the population of America has with self initiative on global issues including this one. This comment also helps by adding many points on why the internet is bad, that I hadn’t already though of on my own.  This source has opened up my eyes to many more reasons and that will help make my paper stronger.

The Value of Vaccinations

This article describes how shots came about, how they became what they are today and how they are currently affected economically. Pharmaceutical companies are viewed as money hungry financial sharks. While that statement is true when it comes to medication, vaccinations are not a money producer for businesses. If anything money is lost in the production of treatments. The so much financial burden is on the companies that we currently only have five companies that continue to produce and research vaccinations. Vaccinations are financially smart, as the price and risk of immunization are significantly less to treating the disease and long-term effects of the disease if a person was to become ill. 

I can use this information in my final paper because it argues against the fact that there is a smokescreen being caused by doctors and the government who financially benefit off the continuation of vaccines.

In this article, 4 professionals, names Hyunjin Kang, Jeong Kyu Lee, Kyung Han You and Seoyeon Lee, are professionals in either health, communications or electronics. The 4 team up and each provide necessarily knowledge that they pick up studying their field. The Want to find out if online news reading shapes the perceptions of the internet as a place of public deliberations. From the abstract of this academic article, the authors say that the internets 2 primary roles is that is is a “major source of news,” and that it is “connecting individual members of society.” Using models to test subject groups, the 4 studied “how individuals’ motives related to news consumption, elaborative online news reading, and online news sharing influence their perceptions of online deliberation.” I chose this article because, for one, the study is held in Korea, which again offers more intelligence around the world on the topic and proved a better estimate of the world’s opinion on the argument of Newspaper versus Internet. I believe that the internet is too overwhelming with all of the excess gadgets and options to connect people around the world with live updates, and this article helps to support o ne of my biggest counter arguments. That is that even though it may seem like too much to handle for some people the internet provides a extremely quick way for anyone in the world to publicly deliberate through a computer screen or phone and a Wi-Fi connection. So I believe I can add some good points as to why the internet is better in some cases, but all around, traditional newspapers are the way to go to read the news.

This is a critic about Kanye’s latest album, The Life of Pablo. The author names different songs on the album and gives his opinion on if it is good or bad. Goes into detail on the album as a whole and what West has recently been doing in his career.

I like this because the author gives descriptive opinions that you can agree with and some that you can disagree with. It’s good to hear a side to someone who may show you something you would have never realized because everyone has a bias, especially when it comes to a favorite artist of yours.
