One of the joys of going to record stores / looking through vinyls at antique stores with friends is the inevitable discovery of Engelbert Humperdinck, who you have to explain was the chosen stage name of an incredibly, incredibly popular musician in the 60s with, like, zero cultural impact (though maybe this is less true in the UK), attested to only by the archaeological record (i.e. the prevalence of his vinyls) and no where else. Nobody’s saying “been getting really into Engelbert Humperdinck lately.” He had his own variety show in 1969–1970. He represented the UK in Eurovision not even 15 years ago. He is STILL ALIVE. And yet. Nothing but a funny name to most people.
