Tempting Fate
"Simmons didn't pack you another one of those sandwiches did she?"
Grant looked over at the other man as he bent to set a tactical case on the floor beside the hotel room couch. It was a remark more than a question, and it was meant to put a smile on the engineer's face and get him to relax a little. Their current assignment didn't hang on the balance of them being caught in a life or death situation, and he wanted to be sure the other man was aware of that. Of course that didn't mean Grant didn't take their assignment seriously, but he wasn't going to begrudge his partner the need for sustenance.
At least not while they were in London for a three day private auction that they were set to attend. Only the richest collectors from across the world were invited to participate in the event, but thanks to Skye, they had managed to acquire two invitations and had their names added to the list. Based on Intel received by one of their operatives, SHIELD believed that underneath the respectability of the exclusive event, there was to be a few underhanded auctions taking place at the same time. Based on the information they were given, SHIELD had reason to suspect there might also be weaponized technology in play. The mission was simply to set up a base of operation in a hotel across the street from the auction house and monitor the building when they were not attending the events.
Grant wasn’t particularly happy about the assignment, since it required him to socialize in a formal setting, but he was hoping it wouldn’t take more than a day to determine if the suspicions were correct concerning the auction. If they were, they would be free to call in the rest of the team and take some measure of action.
While he waited for a reply from Fitz, he began unpacking the gear they had brought along, setting it within reach as he worked.
