Yeah, right!

There were over 300 Indigenous languages spoken in the United States prior to European colonization… but they want us to lose all that knowledge and speak only one.

Those of us who were raised speaking a different language in this country have had the ugly experience of being told to "speak English.” It was offensive and meant to make us feel either embarrassed or angry, but for many of us, we ultimately ended up feeling pity.

We feel sorry for the “English only” folks, because their animosity towards other languages is coming from a place of fear – not love. They are fearful of being left behind in a constantly evolving world. They are scared of the perpetual changes happening all around them. They are terrified of the continual population shifts that they cannot control. Instead of embracing the new worlds that open up with each new language they learn, they give in to their fear and lash out at us for making them feel "uncomfortable.”

We are reminders that the past and the future will always be multilingual. Some people just don’t want to hear it.
