Enhancing Learning with Audio and Video: Post #2
Introduction:
This lesson plan revolves around rhyme scheme and poetic devices. Finding the rhyme scheme in miscellanous poems is a fun activity for students to do, but I want to make it more profound and interesting to their lives. After watching a short video on how rhyme scheme works, students will practice their proficiency of this skill by identifying the rhyme scheme on a number of poems. Since music is a very important part of teenagers’ lives, they’ll take their newfound knowledge of this skill and find songs on the Internet to use for a performance-based assessement.

Overview: (Audio & Video)
This engaging lesson plan will allow for differentiated instruction, flexible groupings, and multiple modalities to meet the needs of all students. Students, working in pairs, will locate a song of their choice and identify the rhyme scheme and poetic devices. They will then participate in a recripcal teaching experience by uploading a song and a videotaped presentation of their “lesson” to a wiki for all to see. In turn, audience members will provide constructive feedback to the presenters via the discussion board and all students will end the assessment process by entering a reflection in their respective portfolios.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages:
First, this assessment will be fun and interesting, plus it directly relates to their lives. Second, students will employ authentic instructional practices to complete this performance-based assessment, namely higher-order thinking skills, depth of knowledge, substantive discussions, real life relevancy, and higher-order technologies. Third, ELANCO is a 1-1 district, so students will access any information and work on it from home or school (Canvas, Google Docs, & wiki). Fourth, students will choose their partners and the technologies they will utilize, such as the computer camera, phones, etc. Fifth, students will have the opportunity to self- and peer-assess the projects and provide constructive feedback to their classmates via the wiki discussion board. Six, students will enter a reflection in their portfolios about their respective performances and set goals for future projects/presentations. Seven, this lesson allows for differentiation, flexible groupings, and learning modalities. It will meet the needs of all students.

Disadvantage:
The only disadvantage I see in this plan pertains to a student who is a select-mute. Since I understand his disability and have had a year and a half instructing this individual, I am going to allow him to film this assignment from home with his two brothers. From experience, if I don’t permit it he simply won’t do it. I always work closely with his mother and guidance counselor to ensure these type of projects are fully completed. This student will not have a problem presenting his performance assessment to the class because it will be previously recorded.
Differentiated Instruction:
Students will have the automony of voice and choice and wll choose their respective partners, songs, and technologies for this performance-based assessment (content knowledge and process skills).
Flexible Groupings:
Large Group Teacher-led Instruction:

2. After viewing a video on rhyme scheme, I will model this skill myself and address any questions and/or concerns.
