“I bought you a drink. To celebrate the new baby. I know you’rea good parent, haven’t had one in awhile, so I figured…”

Summer blinked, bleary-eyed, not entirely certain Raven wasn’tactually a hallucination at the moment. “I still can’t drink that, Raven,” shemumbled, fondly chastising, as if they were a team again. “Breastfeeding?”

Raven paused, just a shadow in the bedroom, but tall—she wasalways so tall, and pretty, and that confidence she wielded like a knife hadtaught Summer more about being a leader than anything else in school…

But she was getting distracted.

Tai, ironically enough, was in the kid’s room now trying tocoax their newborn back to sleep.

Finally, the shadow of Raven shrugged. “I’ll just leave iton the dresser then. Just a bottle of wine, and apparently those get betterwith age.”

Summer watched Raven move from the open window towards thedresser, her eyes finally adjusting to the dim light.

This felt too real to be a dream, but the odd out-of-bodyexperience kept her guessing. She tried to focus on the wine bottle, but couldn’tmake out a name or stamp without the lights.

Finally, Raven moved to the bed and sat down.

Summer’s hand instinctively reached for hers and squeezedwhen she found it.

“Kind of young to have a kid, don’t you think?” Raven asked,intensely examining their intertwined fingers.

“Do I need topoint out the hypocrisy?”

What was left of Raven’s smile now vanished, transformedinto a firm line. “That doesn’t count.”

“Clearly still a touchy subject.” Raven tensed, as if readyto spring straight through the window if Summer uttered another word about herchild, sleeping soundly ten feet down the hall. Instead, Summer gently squeezedher hand, smiling just enough. “And not one I feel like arguing about tonight.So calm down, please?”

A stab of regret hit her square in the chest, though. Shewas a traitor to Yang, would have to face her daughter knowing she’d ignored battleon her behalf for a few more selfish moments with Raven.

Raven, who leaned in now, slowly, and kissed her.

Summer’s heart stopped, but Raven didn’t notice, pushingagainst Summer when she felt no give or hesitation or flinch away.

“I miss you,” Summer said weakly when they’d parted. Hervoice was hoarse enough that it was no louder than a whisper.

Raven tucked some hair behind Summer’s ear and flashed agrin that really had no place in this dark empty room. “You’ll get over itquickly. You’ll be too busy with the kids. Speaking of, what’s the name?”

Summer’s grip on Raven’s fingers loosened; it would be up toRaven to pull away completely, though. “Ruby. Ruby Rose.”

Raven stroked Summer’s thigh, her fingers above the blanket,separated from skin by two layers of fabric and clothing; yet the gesture feltso keenly intimate that it sent shivers up her spine. “Not as pretty as yourname. But very nice.”

Summer couldn’t help laughing. “Y-You should go, Tai will bein soon…”

Raven hummed in mild agreement, rubbing her thumb over theback of Summer’s hand. “We can share a drink another time, then.” She stood,relinquishing Summer’s fingers and making her way back to the dresser.

Summer didn’t ask if she’d ever get that drink; she doubtedshe would ever see Raven again, or if she did, it would be fifteen years downthe line.

Raven scooped up the bottle, giving Summer one last longlook from across the room. She’d pulled her knees up to her chest now; the kissstill burned her lips, as if she’d been kissed by a ghost.

“I’ll just take it so Tai doesn’t give you any trouble aboutit.”

Summer nodded wordlessly. If she blinked, she would missRaven, the bird sweeping out of the room without another word. Raven had neverbeen very good at goodbyes.

In the morning, they found the bottle of wine on the kitchentable. Not trusting it, Tai threw it out without giving any thought to whowould’ve put that there. He was almost as impulsive as Raven, Summer thought.

She passed it off as coincidence that the bottle had thesame name etched in the glass as their first drink together. Raven had neverbeen the sentimental one.
