This scene from the last episode of season 2 scratched something in me. Earlier, we'd seen Jack looking around for Robby every now and then, and when Robby finally joined them to help, Jack said "About time." like he was convinced that sooner or later Robby would help them out. Because no matter how badly he's doing, no matter that he was supposed to leave for his suicide trip 2 hours ago, he'd still show up to help when it comes to patient's life. It reminded me how Abbot "deals" with his trauma by drowning himself in work. Him volounteering to be the medic for the police forces on July 4th weekend, while also intending to work night shift that day. The fact that even when he's home, he keeps police radio on so that he could always get to Pitt in time whenever needed. That's the only way he knows how to deal with his problems, and it's not really great, but that's why whenever he's comforting Robby he keeps talking about how this place needs them, and they need it even more, they were meant to do this, they're the bees that protect the hive or whatever. Jack lives with the idea that his entire purpose is this job and he accepted that, and that's the only reason why he's "better off" than Robby, but that man is certainly not well. And I don't know how much more of "just do what you're meant to be doing" can help Robby from actually taking that suicide trip.
This is a great character study - Jack does okay (at least for now) because he’s been where Robby is and re-found his purpose and sanity in complete dedication to being a doctor, The PITT, and the people they treat.
However, I think the glitch for Robby is that all he’s feeling is the weight of it all - and where Jack thrives under that responsibility, Robby is built differently. He’s responsible so of course he shows up for the patients and his co-workers but right now his soul is being crushed by feeling responsible for everything and everyone he’s ever met.
So the more people constantly tell him he’s “needed” - in one sense he loves it - who doesn’t want to be needed, but that’s also what’s kind of killing him.
Give this man a garden, and a quiet home in the countryside with no phone or TV and some loving animals for several months as his sabbatical (or even an early retirement) and I think he could self-regulate again.
