many fans tend to think of him as either “always harsh” or “always funny or soft”, and they are both trivializations of the character. He can be rude as fuck w/ some people and lovely and sweet as a cupcake w/ others. That’s actually p realistic IMO?

Yeah, I think that's the thing? Like Anders is very much an 'all of the above' when it comes to a lot of personality traits. He can be an ass with a lot of people, but he can also be the sweetest thing with others. And I think the issue is it's tough to reconcile those two for a lot of people, so they just pick one and go with that in all situations, or try to mix them, but miss a bit and go too strongly with one or the other. It’s really tough to get the balance just right.

I like to think I can balance them successfully haha, but I also don't really write him in situations where he tends to be rude as fuck. I mean, most of my stuff focuses on him and Hawke, so he's softer during those moments. But if I were to write more involving people he didn't get along with, yeah, you can bet your ass he wouldn't be acting all sweet and nice with them lmao.

Ah, yes, that makes sense. I was kind of thinking in that direction, but I didn't know his character well enough to have it fully fleshed out in my mind. So thank you ^^

the problem is that the dialogues are written in a way that makes Hawke seem “right” and Anders and Merrill “wrong and crazy” and that’s completely different from the theoretical idea of the rivalmances as “we agree to disagree but I still love you”

Yes! Those are the kind of words I was looking for but couldn't find. Thank you, that describes the issue perfectly. And why the other rivalmances aren't quite as bad, at least potentially in some variations.
